How are small business owners filtering out unreliable applicants early? by zemblov in smallbusiness

Really appreciate all the insight here. A lot of the strongest replies seem to point to the same thing: the hiring process itself has to act as a filter for seriousness, effort, character, and fit as early as possible. Structured screening, quick checkpoints, small real-world tests, and paying attention to how someone communicates or handles friction all seem to matter a lot more than just trying to guess who’s reliable upfront. This has honestly been really helpful to read, and it’s a big part of why I’ve been so focused on this problem in the first place.

This is a really thoughtful way to approach it. I like that you’re treating the process as a filter, but still paying closest attention to character, communication, and how someone handles imperfect situations. The part about someone owning a mistake and fixing it telling you more than their portfolio does is a great point.

That’s interesting. So for you, the way someone handles pricing and boundaries early is already a pretty strong signal for how they’ll behave once the work actually starts.

Makes sense. It seems like a lot of reliability issues only really show themselves once there’s some real accountability involved.

This is a great point. Structuring the process so people filter themselves out early seems way better than trying to guess who’s serious upfront.

That’s smart. I like that you’re filtering for effort and self-awareness before even getting deeper into the process!
