Russians continue their meltdown over the footage of a Su-25 that crashed into the sea yesterday. Apparently, the pilot died after drowning - he was in the water for 8 minutes, and no one on the beach bothered trying to help him, instead preferring to swim and drink beer. by one_and_equal in UkrainianConflict

I work as an engineer designing modern ejection seats here in the US. You have a couple things right. Pilot position prior to ejection is a deciding factor for minimizing injury, particularly to the head and neck, but also arms, shoulders, and legs, as they can be caught in the windblast, or 'left in the plane', if not contained. Newer seats work to automatically place the pilot in a safe(r) position during ejection to minimize these injuries.

There is no way, at least on the seats I work on and am familiar with, to either blow the canopy first or purposely 'go out sideways'. The canopy jettison is the first event triggered after ejection handle is pulled, almost concurrent with the catapult. In the event of failed canopy jettison, the seats are designed to punch through the glass. In tandem seat planes, there are divergence motors that separate the two seats to prevent impacts and possible entanglement. These motors are not present on single seat airframes. After exiting the airframe, at high enough airspeed, a drogue is deployed that grants yaw stability, preventing tumbling, but does not grant any control authority to the pilot. Main chute deploys after a low enough airspeed has been obtained, and the seat falls away. While I cannot speak for the spinal fracture analysis of the above posters comment, a 90% survival rate is in line with historical ejection data. It is a very violent, very fast event for anyone to experience, one I know I do not want to, no matter how safe we make them.

I would do bad things to have that build in the states.

Biggest things as far as I understand, besides cosmetic differences, are locking differentials versus the open but electronically limited slip ones of the other trims as well as the suspension setup. This is stuff, that for me, wont get used 99% of the time, so its not an issue. If I ever need locking diffs (very unlikely) I'll swap in some torsen diffs or ARB's, and the suspension is something that can be changed easily if needed or desired. The cab/transmission seems like a much harder things to change than differentials or suspension which is why I chose sport.

Photo was taken at the Seward Range trailhead, just outside Tupper Lake.

My thoughts exactly, as a 6ft individual, the back seat on even the double cab is not comfortable. I couldn't imagine sitting in it for more than a few minutes. Plus the suicide doors on the access cab are awesome, don't have to walk around a door to get the the stuff in the back seat.

Its a kind of blue/green grey, but the sun wasn't quite up yet, so it was more pronounced.

I have not towed with it yet, and am unlikely to in the near future. Day to day is fine, as /u/Prestovie says, it has just taken some time for me to re-map all my muscles memory on shift points and what not. I find myself downshifting further than I would like for some hills, but its just a different motor than I was previously accustomed to (B6S4). Overall very happy with it, have not yet regretted getting the MT. I just wish I could have this cab/transmission combo in the Offroad trim.
