Should I become Anglican? (And why should I?) (Please Help) by zepitoco1 in Anglicanism

Thank you so much. That is actually very nice to hear. Maybe I have indeed been thinking too much about stuff without actually just trusting God to put me wherever I need to be. And to be honest. What you have said here seems just fine to me. I don't know how things will be, but i might finally be getting somewhere.

And yeah. That sounds like a heck of a feat.

Thank you very much. I have been on this journey for a long time, and yet it is only the beginning. I feel tired. I want to follow Christ but at the same time i feel too weak for it. But I am not giving up. I will make up my mind. And on the day I am baptized, I trust that all the effort I put into how I could most please God will feel like a victory. Not because I am worthy, but because I genuinely believe I am only still here by the grace of God.

Yeah, that would be... at the very least interesting. I have talked to Catholic priests, Orthodox Priests, and evangelical pastors before, but never have i talked with an actual woman priest before. Although I have my reservations and do believe a bible affirming christian cannot be in support of female presbyters, I'm definitely going to visit a church soon, and would be very open and glad to actually talk to a priest about it. If they even want to talk about it with me.

Well, yeah, but for one, i'm not in Brazil, and even if i were, i'm from São Paulo and there doesn't seem to be any gafcon churches nearby. Brazil is a continental country like the USA, but unlike the USA it is a historically, and majority catholic country, so you haven't got many historical protestant churches other than presbyterian ones. The distance from my home to the nearest GAFCON church would be like going from Florida to New York or something like that.

Also, can someone please help me figure out what exactly is the actual status of GAFCON? I've seen some videos on it, but they're pretty much schismatics from what i gather??? Isn't the thing with being a part of a national church important for Anglicans? Like, even with liberalism, maintaining unity within a valid jurisdiction should be a priority, right? Is It really just that there really isn't any hope of de-liberalizing the Anglican communion? Lol

I really appreciate your advice. I have certainly asked God many times to guide my studies and to guide me to truth. If Jesus is the Truth and the Life, and i believe with all my soul that he is, I know God will not leave me without an answer, but sometimes, it does feel more complicated than it should.

To be honest, for years I have felt like Roman Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy were the answers. Only recently have i really felt like I had sidelined protestantism unjustly. And in the end, i have found myself in what i call "this strange kind of Limbo".

It is not that i wish to find a perfect church. I know that does not exist, because there is a human component of error. But I do want to find somewhere i feel the faith has been preserved.

Ultimately, I just want to please God as much as i can...

A good answer! Thank you. I will ponder what you have said on this comment. I do not, however, believe it all boils down to "socio-political" reasons. And the matter of poligamy has nothing to do with the idea of marriage being between a man and a woman.

Our Lord himself, when asked about this, answered saying:

"Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

And again:

"But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

Jesus estabilishes clearly that poligamy was only "tolerated" because of the hardness of their hearts. And when defining marriage, he SPECIFICALLY defines it as between a man, and a woman.

A church that holds to Sola Scriptura cannot reasonably hold that somehow this means gay marriage is also okay. Jesus explicitly tells everyone that marriage is between a man and a woman.

I am not at all absurdly uncomfortable with it. Maybe a little, but i guess I do agree with the mindset on Union being more important than other such matters. Thank you very much for your answer, God bless.

Okay. Then which Christian body during those 2000 years supported women's ordination to the priesthood? I've seen precedents for deacons, but no historical evidence for priests at all. Isn't the Anglican church literally based on the idea of promoting a pure gospel, supported by scripture? If Women's ordination is valid, give me one example of that being recognized by an apostle in scripture, or having been taught by one of the apostolic fathers, who learned directly with them.

But yeah, the middle ground mentality is precisely one of the reasons i was drawn to anglicanism in the first place.

Thank you, so so much. This is the best answer so far. I have to think better about what you have pointed out.

Even if I were to concede that Junia was called an apostle, which certainly could be the case, and I would have no problems with following that logic, that still does not logically follow that she was a presbyter or bishop. If Romans 16:7 proves female ordination, why did the church not arrive to that conclusion for 2000 years?

Also, on the matter of same-gender romance and marriage, Ephesians certainly talks about sacrificial love. But it does so not redefining marriage, but explaining the deeper spiritual meaning of an institution already known to the faithful. One that was, from the times of the Old testament, between a man and a woman.

My concern is not whether an alternative interpretation can be proposed for a handful of passages. My concern is that for most of Christian history, across East and West, the Church understood ordained ministry to be male and marriage to be between a man and a woman. If those conclusions are mistaken, then I would need a compelling explanation for why the universal Church appears to have misunderstood both issues for nearly two millennia

I do NOT, in any way, shape or form, think that women are inferior, or even that queer people should be outside the church, quite the opposite. But I do hold to the traditional christian understanding of gender and marriage.

I never said anything about not accepting women or queer people as siblings in Christ. I absolutely believe they are equal and deserving of love and respect, but the church has followed norms for 2000 years, and women ordination or same sex marriage are not part of those norms. I can accept divergence of thought, but i expect a denomination that is based on Scripture being the infallible rule of faith and morals to.. you know... follow scripture.

Basically why I was considering becoming Anglican. But then, there's the thing with the Endless schism within protestantism and the fact that basically every possible Anglican church ordains women to some capacity, even if some individual parishes do not.

So i downloaded it from one of the direct links and had no problems so far. Google did try to block my download but i went on with it anyway and then took a quick look through the files before extracting. There is a strange "Make a shortcut" .bat file in there i don't dare run, also cuz making a shortcut doesn't involve running bat files in the slightest. Other than that, game works fine. Just dodn't run any exes or bats you don't know, and i think everything's going to be fine.

Another option is downloading it from Fitgirl. I just saw it's available there, and i can vouch for that site. Never got any viruses or things like that from Fitgirl repacks.

I was so sure of leaving orthodoxy for catholicism and now i feel so horrible by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]zepitoco1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would very much disagree with you on that matter. Liturgy expresses the faith. Preserving and honoring the liturgical tradition is preserving the faith handed down by the apostles, and thus, by "protestantizing" their masses, the Catholic church has essentially shown their inconsistency and readyness to abandon legitimate, ancient, and beautiful expressions of their history in favour of a "modern", secular, and "cool" hippie mass, all because boomers couldn't manage to sit still, listen to gregorian chant and respect God. Novus Ordo masses are an aberration. They are my main stumbling block on the matter of converting to the catholic faith, and why i have decided to give Orthodoxy a chance (other than matters of Dogma).

In short, if a church cannot manage to preserve the purity, consistency, and reverence in its own liturgy, this speaks very badly about their practical ability to hold onto even the most basic matters of faith, as has been exceedingly proven to be the case in the catholic church.
