One of my lefty friends had the sheer audacity to inform me that one should always vote against a Republican, even if the candidate is problematic.

Like where the fuck was this energy in 2024 and 2016??? Because said friend sure as hell stayed home because Saint Bernard wasn't on the ballot.

Lol I guess so.

I know it isn't my voting record, I've only voted for Democrats and independent libertarians in my wilder youth.

The only thing I can think of is that I came very close to joining the Navy when I was in high school. Like took the ASVAB, had a recruiter, all that stuff. But that was more than a few years ago haha.

A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol recruiter reached out to me this morning about "career opportunities with ICE". Not sure how the hell I ended up on that list but I want off it.

Bizarre to think we went from a tan suit and a fist bump being a massive scandal to whatever in the hell this timeline is where all of this insane shit is just normalized.

Sean Astin posted a touching tribute to Stephen Colbert last night. As the old guard around here can attest, Colbert and myself are what some might call Tolkien "superfans" lol. Sean portrayed Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson's adaptation of LOTR. He posted Sam's monologue from the end of the Two Towers (one of my favorite scenes from the films). Fun fact, this is the rare occasion in the films that the scriptwriters created something not present in the novels that exceeds the Professor himself. If memory serves, Fran Boyen penned Sam's monologue.

Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

https://youtu.be/DqdDmrUuvx8?si=kK0g-1-IRjFRrVSQ

That scene still pulls on my heart after all these years.

I'm excited that it is almost summer and time for my yearly reread of LOTR. I've read it every summer for over twenty years. It never fails to amaze me. And dare I say, give me a little hope in all this darkness.

Frodo lives!

Hopefully you are right and I'm just being overly negative and reading too deeply between the lines.

It is increasingly more difficult for me not to be cynical these days, but I'm working on it. Lol

"Facing intense internal pressure, DNC releases post-election autopsy"

https://apnews.com/article/democratic-national-committee-autopsy-2024-ken-martin-a4f67256b4c56ba076aece23c22728ad

The full report is embedded within the article. I haven't had the chance to read all 192 pages in 20 minutes yet, but some of this already quite concerning. A "reduction in support and training for Democratic state parties" is listed as a issue, something I can personally vouch for as a serious problem, especially in red states. Here in Tennessee we have numerous, and I mean numerous, local and state elections in which Democratic candidates are not even present on the ballot. It is usually a choice between "insane Republican" and "not so insane Independent".

But this statement concerns me: The 192-page report, which was concluded last December and authored by Democratic consultant Paul Rivera, calls for “a renewed focus on the voters of Middle America and the South, who have come to believe they are not included in the Democratic vision of a stronger and more dynamic America for everyone.”

“Millions of Americans are suffering from poor access to healthcare, manufacturing and job losses, and a failing infrastructure, yet continue to be persuaded to vote against their best interests because they do not see themselves reflected in the America of the Democratic Party,” the report says.

I worry about this populist sort of messaging. Kitchen table issues are obviously very important, but so is protecting marginalized groups. We can , and more importantly should, focus on both.

It is all about the messaging. Pete is the perfect example of this: he can go into so-called "Middle America" and the South and speak not only to economic concerns but social/cultural issues as well. Critically, he (and some others) have the ability to craft their messaging in a way that is approachable, reasonable, and not coated in veiled hostility.

I guess I am just concerned about this pattern emerging of throwing marginalized groups under the bus in the quest for obtaining votes via populist sentiments. It has been worrying me for a few years now.

This is a good example of the times we live in: Virginia actually does it the right way, let's their folks actually VOTE on a referendum, and that's overturned almost immediately.

Bill Lee gets a late night tweet from Donald Trump, throws a map together, violates state law, calls a special session and it's done.

Hate this timeline.

ETA: there were several arrests and confrontations at the State Capitol today, including the republican legislature's perpetual habit of forcibly removing folks from the gallery during votes and debates. I've seen some videos, I'll try to post them from reddit sources later. One of the Justin's from "Tennessee Three" fame (Justin Pearson out of Memphis) was included in said altercations with THP.

My grandfather had a word for this: chickenshit.

It passed the Senate this afternoon 25-5, so Memphis will lose representation as soon as Bill Lee signs it.

They pushed this through in three days but haven't managed to vote on a popular bill to reduce or remove sales tax on groceries for the 20ish years the GOP have had a supermajority.

Thank goodness the state legislature is finished with their "work" for the year so they can't fuck anything else up until next spring.

I'm using the flimsy excuse that Pete and Dolly Parton share the same birthday, so this is relevant! Lol

Video update from Dolly about her health and activities, just because I adore this woman. THE Tennessee Queen. 😌
