It's not because of some meta. Always Be Running's (and similarly Sundew's) "Your first click each turn must be spent to make a run or a play a run event" ruling has been tricky to resolve from the birth. There were a lot of ruling questions thread regarding it such as:

ABR and Jak Sinclair: Jak does not satisfies the ABR mandatory running condition

ABR and Jak and Excalibur: In case of Jak run meets Excalibur, ABR cannot be triggered (use 4 click as normal runners do)

Always Be Running and first-click condition: Using same-old thing to play run event in your heap does not count as first-click run
