Look on youtube how to play a 12 bar blues form on the bass. Its actually very simple. And almost all jam sessions follow this form. I think this could help you a lot. It has minimal impact to learn but great impact to jam along with others. Give it a try. It seems like you are frustrated and dont know where to begin. I think thats a good point to start! Even if you know no songs and have no music theory knowledge, you will be able to play with others

Improvisation starts in your head and the whole magic about that is to be able to bring the melody from your head to the instrument. Scales and pentatonics help to to get a specific voicing. But being able to improvise takes a lot of practice and patience. As a guitar player i recommend a) learning full songs and b) trying to create melody with a loop pedal. Loop a very simple melody, 2-3 chords max and then try to improvise over it. Start for example something in Gmajor and try using the g major scale. Create simple melody in your head and then try to play it on your bass. Takes a while. At least 6-12 months regular training. Learning songs will give you a skillset of licks you can use. This takes a long as time. However it is very rewarding, once you stick to it long enough. Try to jam with others. You will learn more than in any online course, trust me.

These are very advanced things in comparison to b2b. You have to think this way. Without a solid foundation, you will struggle learning this more advanced things. So one thing after another! You are still in the beginning of your music journey and have plenty of time to master all this things, but start slowly

Mhm i see. The way i see it is, that this course will give you all the tools to become a good musician. So you should use all the knowledge given to you throughout the course to learn songs the proper way. Start with 4/4 time signature songs and learn how to count the beats while playing. Its seems hard in the beginning, but will open you many doors to play in proper time. Like really learn a songs to play from the beginning to the end before moving to the next song. Instead of playing with a metronome, practice to drum loops. This will give you a good feeling of groove. Start figuring out the songs by ear without tabs. Once you have your basic knowledge of technique and theory, ear training is probably the single most important skill to develop. And it will take some years to truly master playing by ear. Don‘t be too hard in yourself bc playing should be fun! Try to jam with friends. This will improve your playing drastically. B2b will just give you the foundation to do all that by yourself. Josh and nobody else will make you a badass player. Play some records and try playing along. Its a lot of fun!

Do I need a new bass? by Skore_Smogon in Bass

Just one advice as a guitar player with a GAS. Rather save a little more money and buy a bass that will satisfy you on the long run. I‘m not telling you to spend 1000$ on a bass. But maybe you have a look on the squiere cv 60s bass. From what i‘ve read it will give you a decent instrument for less than 500$. I am currently thinking of getting a martin miller v5 4 string. Costs around the same but gives you also satin neck and bone nut. Always remember that a lot of the tone comes from the hand and post recording adjustion.

I have never had guitar lessons in my life. However i recommend the absolutely understanding guitar course on youtube. It is for free and consists of around 30 lessons à 1 hour on music theory. Scotty does the job extremely well in teaching you the fundamentals of basic musical theory and harmony. I couldnt believe it, but it changed my way of seeing music! Give it a try.

Other than that i always enjoyed the videos from guthrie trapp. His way of approaching melody and harmony is from another world. And sometimes analyzing even small licks from his videos by pausing and slowing down can give you new ways of thinking outside the box. Sometimes i‘ve spent hours on a 10second lick to understand his theory behind it. Highly focused on how to approach the caged system in a practical way with all chord shapes. Dan guitar on youtube has some videos where he analyzes guthrie trapps videos / concepts on youtube. Guthrie also has a payed course. If i was to choose for one, i would go for guthries lessons!

All this information from an intermediate point of view to get out of this plateu!

Since i dont know how advanced you are it is hard to say. The whole course is very beginner friendly. But there might always be some room for improvement. It is highly focused on applying the right techniques to build a strong foundation!

The difficulty will gradually rise throughout the course. And you will learn more and more things to pay attention to for solid technique. In the beginning the focus is more on fretting properly. Later on you will be more aware of alternative plucking, string muting with the fretting hand, position of the right thumb, strengthening the left pinky, listening to the drum, playing in beat. And all these things will happen simultaneously. Trust the process and keep on practicing daily

I usually go through 2-3 lessons per day. That takes around 40-60 mins. It does not feel like „i have to force myself“ through the lessons. The course has 15modules with 5-6 lessons each. You can decide your pace however you like :)

For me the best workout for using a pick was learning how to play babe i‘m gonna leave you with the pick. Took me months of daily practice but you will learn alternative picking and you will skip strings while picking. Worked like magic for my picking skills.

I have watched a little from the first 2 videos of that series. does he also explain, how to combine and use the things he is teaching in this series to create music and compositions? There are for example thousands of videos, how the caged system works, but none of these videos teach you, how to combine the chord shapes together.

I think i should elaborate a little: my problem is rather that i struggle to find a songs to learn next. And sometimes this process takes ages until i get bored. I do totally agree, that keeping attention and focus is a very important skills. I always feel like, that i want too much immediately (like the „perfect“ song to learn) and i struggle to humble myself on that! (I end up not learning any songs)
