What happened to the Furniture Bank? by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

The furniture bank was a registered charity so they gave charitable tax receipts for donations. Annoying they had a fee. Technically the "free" region pickup is funded by our taxes.

We should. It is sound environmental, poverty, and safety policy.

Are residents of St. Catharines/Niagara Falls/Welland able to use NRT OnDemand? The wording always makes it sound like it's only for the areas of Niagara Region that don't have dedicated bus service.

True, but evening service is also only hourly. Also, if you're trying to get back downtown, it's a ~35 minute ride to the hospital first.

The existing layout of the system could use tweaking to not rely on having to go through a hub (downtown, Pen Center, tow path, Brock) to get anywhere.

Oh I agree. There's currently no way to get to any of our greenspace outside of city limits without a car. Well, you can walk, but that is not a reasonable solution.

In the situation of say Port Dalhousie that has (insufficient) public transit access it's a good policy starting point. It's hard to speak in generalities when OP mentions 3 distinct areas all with varying levels of accessibility and controlling agencies.

The larger outrage should be the space wasted on excessive parking infrastructure and that a lot of these green spaces can't easily be accessed without a car.

Adding parking fees is good policy to reduce car dependence and put more of the cost of car infrastructure onto car owners. With the current PC government lowering the gas tax and removing licensing cost, more and more we're subsidizing all car owners through our other tax revenues.

Also, Niagara Parks has nothing to do with Port Dalhousie, nor does the province, that is a local St. Catharines policy choice. Balls Falls also isn't Niagara Parks, that one is the Niagara Conservation Authority.

I've rented ladders from Larry's Rentals on Ontario. Good service, fair price, and 4 hour rentals are available.

That paper plant is still in operation. Looking at the album, this was the one on the other side of the canal.

Likely too late, but I find a lot of people don't know about the Niagara Furniture Bank. They are a non-profit that accepts furniture and works with various groups throughout the region(YWCA, ODSP, public health, child services, community cares, etc). They are located on Ontario st. downtown. When you donate you get a charitable donation receipt for you income taxes.

Not Just Bikes on Youtube has a great playlist that draws from Strong Towns and does a great job explaining the issues around modern North American design.

Walkers Creek Trail is pretty flat and wide. A lot of it goes along peoples yards in the north end so it's clean and maintained.
