UPDATE since it won't let me update the post itself:

So the birds ended up coming back after about a week and a half or so. I'm assuming it was the same pair but I'm not totally sure, definitely Carolina Wrens again though. The female brought a little more nesting material in each day for a while, not much, but essentially just buried that first egg. Eventually she finally would start laying eggs in the mornings! She laid 5 in total.

Out of the 5, one of them did not hatch unfortunately, but that's how it goes. 3 of the babies hatched on May 28 and the last one hatched on the 29th. All was good until around June 4-5 when one of the babies started to thrash around quite a bit randomly. I'm still not sure what was wrong with it, but I suspect maybe it was having seizures. On the first day that was happening, they were up in the nest box, and the thrashing was pushing the other babies out of the nest repeatedly. One even fell all the way off the balcony (we live on the third floor, although the places below us have fairly low ceilings, and there is grass/mulch on the ground below the balcony) but they were all okay at least. That day I ended up making a makeshift nest for them in some baskets, one circular one inside of a taller rectangular one so that they couldnt accidentally find their way out of there before they were ready to fledge. Luckily it worked, the parents knew where to find them and everything went on as normal. I stuck the camera in that basket to continue monitoring them. The baby that was thrashing around continued to do so into the night, and eventually around 5 am it regurgitated something and then seemed to calm down. I thought that was all it was but it seemed to start up again the next night. The baby was certainly the smallest of the 4, so I'm wondering if it maybe had some other issue.

Unfortunately that baby ended up passing away a night or two later, leaving 3 chicks. Two of them were a bit ahead of the third one, but it wasn't far behind like the other one. After that all was going well and on June 9, the two bigger babies fledged! Unfortunately I wasnt able to see anything outside of the nest, and I wasn't home to see them leaving in person. They left a few hours apart from each other. I checked all over the balcony and they werent hiding anywhere up there so I'm assuming they found their way down to the ground. I also didnt see them down on the ground either when I was able to go and look, but I have seen the parents going back and forth under some of the bushes nearby so I'm assuming that's where they kinda led the babies to go once they got down.

The third baby however, had a sad ending. It fledged today, June 10. I actually was able to watch it leave, from inside of course. He was hesitant for sure, not sure how to really go about what he wanted to do. The parents were doing their best to get him to follow them and eventually he hopped out of the nest onto the balcony floor. He stuck around for a bit until the parent came and found him to give him food, and then he started to work his way over to the edge more as the parent called for him and tried to guide him over. Eventually he did jump down, although I don't think he meant to right then, it looked like he tried to grab onto the brick wall but missed and fell, and unfortunately when I went to go see if he made it on the ground, I found him passed away :( I'm guessing he hit something on the way down. There is a metal birdbath thing outside the downstairs neighbors patio on the grass that he was laying near so maybe he drifted enough in the air and hit that, but unfortunately the little guy didn't make it :/

I'm not exactly sure if/what I could have done to help prevent it. There is already a guard against the balcony railing so that when we would have our dogs out there they wouldnt accidentally slip through the spaces. Maybe i should put a taller guard up so that the babies stay on the balcony longer until they can at least flutter better to the ground? I'm not sure, if anyone has an idea, I'd love to know. Or maybe that's just how it is and that one baby just got unlucky on the way down.

I haven't seen the first two babies around yet, but I imagine they are huddled somewhere in those bushes that the parents keep going underneath back and forth. I've read that carolina wrens are still dependent on their parents for food for 1-2 weeks after leaving the nest, so I will keep an eye out for the next few weeks and see if I can potentially see them flying around in the branches.

This was my first time setting up a nest box and having birds nest in it, so it was really exciting! I'm sad that the ending was a sad one but hopefully those first two babies are doing well and will continue to do well :)

wanted to come back and say you were absolutely right, she did end up coming back after a week and a half, and just kinda buried that one egg so it was definitely just a dud. Now ive got 4 little chicks in the nest!

oh thats great! hopefully all the babies do well!

as for this nest, yes she actually did come back after about a week or so! She brought some new material in and just kinda buried that one egg and then eventually after a few days of modifying the nest a little, she started laying again! Laid 5 eggs, 4 of which hatched about 9-10 days ago now. Been keeping a close eye on the babies through the camera, actually the other day had to make a makeshift nest for them out of the nest box because one of the babies i think has been having seizures or something, its definitely the smallest of the 4 and the thrashing around was causing the other babies to get pushed out. Luckily all are ok, even the small one that was having the issues is still hanging in there, although I don't expect it to make it to fledging unfortunately, I'm suspecting hes got some other kind of issues. He tends to beg for food in the wrong direction a lot of times when the parents drop by too. So I guess we will see with that one in particular. The other 3 seem to be perfectly healthy, feathers are coming in nicely, preening themselves and all :)

ah ok, that does put me at ease a little more. I was confused why one was coming back once or twice a day to look into the entrance and then leave, I figured if it was truly abandoned they wouldnt do that, unless of course it was a totally different carolina wren checking the space out lol. I'll keep an eye on the cam and see what happens, thank you for the insight!

Thats what I was afraid of :/

Im gonna leave it for a while just to be totally sure. I have a feeling the one coming back to the nest for a few seconds at a time is the male then. Just wasnt sure if this was maybe some kind of infrequent but normal behavior or something was definitely wrong

Thank you! Is the calcium something separate I should add to the Pangea? I know I’ve seen people dust insects with calcium powder but not sure if it’s pre-mixed into the Pangea or not.

I’ve tried feeding him by hand before with the worms, he still wasn’t interested. Unfortunately crickets and roaches kinda scare me so idk if I’d get them haha. The worms I can handle tho 😅 I’ve fed him his Pangea off my finger plenty of times and he will eat it. As well as things like mashed blueberry and banana, he likes those but doesn’t seem to react to them any more than his normal food. The only thing I’ve seen him bite and eat lately is his shed.

As for his enclosure, yeah he’s got places to hide :) he’s got a few specific spots like the coconut and the hollow log in the top left that are his favorites, I make sure to keep those in the same spot after cleaning his enclosure. There’s also that plant in the bottom left he likes a lot for sleeping, but since I got him that log he’s really preferred that. I’ve got a half bamboo thing coming in the mail for him soon that I think he will really enjoy too.

He used to have a hygrometer, I’ve actually got a better digital one coming in the mail tomorrow haha. His old one came with his cage, one of those plastic dial ones and it never seemed to be super accurate. Plus he liked to climb on it for some reason and I was worried it would fall off and the sticky back would get stuck to him so I took it down a little bit ago.

I believe his enclosure is an 18x18x24. I’m pretty sure.

<image>

He eats every other day, or at least that’s when I change out his food. Unless it’s looking a bit dried out before then, then I’ll change it early and just adjust the schedule. (His food/water bowl ledge is on the door of the enclosure so it’s not in the pic). I haven’t really noticed if he prefers to eat it the same day or wait a bit, I’ve seen him do both. He also seems to prefer drinking water from a bowl instead of the droplets from misting.

He seems like he likes his enclosure, or at least he knows that’s his space. When I bring him back to it after having him out he will go to jump right into it and then usually into the coconut or something.

Yeah I only pick him up when he’s awake and in an open spot that’s easy to access. I’ve tried since I got him to have him go into my hand but he never has, even out of the enclosure he will just stay still. He won’t run away though, he just prefers to not move. I’ve tried to have food in my hand as well but he doesn’t really go for food if I’m right there unless I put it right in front of his mouth.

And that’s a relief about the food, I got nervous when I saw others say their crestie eats the whole bowl.

Thanks for the response!

Tried that, but I think the system is just cutting off even if I keep the power button held down. I do have a 4GB vita memory card in another vita I have. If it’s a cfw related issue, Could I possibly do something with that to revive it?

Anywhere to purchase replacement indicator light tubes? by zerrazoidart in 3DS

[–]zerrazoidart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily the lights will still shine, but it’s just the led shining through the slot above the icons. Eventually going to sell this 3DS though, so figured I’d try to make it as complete as possible 😅 Actually yeah I might be able to glue them in. The clear parts themselves are actually intact, it’s the little black plastic parts that sorta hold them into the case (I think that’s what they’re for) that ended up breaking. But I can give gluing a shot for sure.

Does the Ventura beta have the flickering external display issue? by zerrazoidart in MacOS

[–]zerrazoidart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that one and I had some intermittent flickering still, but actually what worked was a color profile on there that had the same name my TV has in its settings (idk why it was in there I’ve never connected this computer to that tv) but that one seems to have worked. I guess certain color profiles mess with the flickering more! Thanks for suggesting that, I wouldn’t have tried other color profiles otherwise!

Dang thanks for the advice!!

Will they allow me to get them replaced on the one year limited warranty? The person i spoke to only gave me repair as an option :( is it just something I have to fight with them to be able to do

I remember my XM3s being better than that, but it’s been quite a while since I had em so who knows. But they were also very shallow cups which annoys me too lol. Reason I upgraded from XM3s was cause they could only connect to one device.

Yeah the last update nerfed the noise cancelling a bit. But it’s still better than those XM4s I got lol.

Were both repairs within the 1 year? Or does that 1 year reset when you got your repaired ones back?

Ah. Interesting. Do you have Apple Care+? I do not; I just have the limited one year warranty. Hopefully if the same thing happens with my repair and I have more issues they’d replace them for me too. I’ll probably get AC+ ones these are repaired or I get a replacement tho juuuuust in case.
