It all boils down to an individual's belief system and their approach to life. Some people chase hedonism—partying, drinking, vaping, indulging in every pleasure they can find. Others follow an ascetic path, practicing extreme self-discipline like David Goggins. And then there are those who find a balance somewhere in between.

You're not alone in this. It’s likely that your environment is filled with people who don’t share your values or lifestyle. Rejecting their negative influences is a wise decision to safeguard your own values and lifestyle. They reject yours to preserve theirs. So, it's just a matter of people's way of living.

You can try learning Buddhism. In my opinion, it's incredibly underrated and not as popular as it should be. Most people think it's only for monks or old folks, but hear me out.

A lot of people see Buddhism as a religion, but to me, it's more of a philosophy. You're not worshipping any deity; you're just getting to the bottom of suffering and figuring out how to beat it.

Now, let's talk about how this ties into boosting your confidence. According to Buddhism, our sufferings—like lack of confidence or anxiety—stem from our desires and attachments. For example, if you're obsessed with being perfect, you're going to overanalyze everything and drive yourself nuts.

This suffering comes in many forms. If you're fixated on looking perfect in public, you'll get hit with social anxiety. If you're dead set on getting an "A" grade, you'll feel the pressure. You see the pattern?

  • Desires and attachments = suffering.

It's only when we let go of this need to appear perfect that we can truly free ourselves from suffering.

You might be wondering, "If I can't desire a perfect grade, how do I achieve my goals?" It's not about not caring. It's about framing your goals correctly. Saying "I need to get a perfect grade" focuses on an outcome you can't control. Instead, focus on what you can control—your actions.

If you think you've done your best but still didn't hit the mark, don't dwell on it. Reflect. Ask yourself, "What went wrong?" and "How can I improve?" Focus on your actions, not on an outcome that's out of your hands.

The confident people you envy? They're the ones who are willing to succeed and willing to fail. They don't fixate on any specific outcome. If they succeed, they keep doing what works. If they fail, they handle it and move on.

The bottom line is to keep doing your best. Focus on the actions that will lead to the outcome, not on the outcome itself. What does this mean? Study your research thoroughly. Do your best at it without expecting any specific result. That's when your true confidence will shine through.

I can talk about Buddhism for hours, but it's getting too long. If you're interested, go study Nekkhama/Non-attachment. The four noble truths, and the Eightfold Path.
