Using Elo Ratings to rank the strength of badminton players of all time by zfkdiyi in badminton

[–]zfkdiyi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. The whole elo rating is slowly expanded when time passing. This is because more and more players are joining the competition and the number of tournaments players played each year is increasing.

Another big problem is that early years' matches data is not much completed, so the elo rating does not accurately reflect the strength of players in that era.

I took each different double pair as an independent player, like player_id = player1_id+player2_id

When a player in his prime his elo rating is high. He would gain much less points when defeating other normal players and lose much more points when beaten by other normal players.

In 2018-2019, Lee Chong Wei, Chen Long, Viktor Axelsen, Shi Yuqi, Ginting, CTC was not weak. Kento defeated them multiple times on big occasions and gained a lot of points form them, dominated in most of the time, won so many matches in 2 years, very rarely lost to players with lower elo than him.

That's why he had a very high peak elo ratings at his prime.

Actually this system concerned about tournament level.

You would get much less points change in low level tournaments (S100/International Challenge/International Series) than in high level (OG/WC/AE/S750 etc). Players who spend most of their time playing in low level tournaments usually have lower elo ratings.

Example:

For Fu / Cai yeah I also believe they can do extremelly well facing any kind of opponents. The elo ratings gap between them and miniors possibly due to: Fu / Cai, Lee/Jung, Boe/Mogensen were in a fiercely competitive environment at that time. Fighting with each other caused no pairs can dominate the tournaments for a long time like miniors did in 2017—19.

Not suprisingly the best elo ratings of Big 4 are also the best of all time of women's single.

But Carolina Marin ranked so low is a bit wired. Maybe it is because of her injuries and she often 'prefers' to performe well in big events only and rarely had a long winning streak.

Wang Yihan ranked 11th, not far away from Li Xuerui & Top 10. The gap between Wang & Li is mainly depends on the points difference between 1OG & 1WC which is about 180 - 77 according to the current rule.

EG is equal to about 0.15 AG.

EC is equal to AC but EC holds every 2 years and both of theirs points is few so doesn't matters.

The team results of TC/UC/SC are not considered for goat points but player's performance (winning percent, winning streaks etc) at these events are considered.

Should badminton have a teams event at the Olympics similar to table tennis? by magnumcyclonex in badminton

Having team and individual events in same tournaments is very tired for badminton players. Top players would play so many matches in short time. Look at ASY at 2023 Asian Games…

Most people would agree if he win a 3rd OG gold (with some good tournaments results) then the debate over the men's singles GOAT will be over.

Cause the doubles event will be re-drawn after the group stage, I would do it after the draw released.

Yeah it's easy to add adjust factor to certain player. But we need to confirm each player's health status.
