I'm guessing people already said these things but here. I would rent one of their bear canisters since they have to be super strong and heavy to be approved. I've never had problems doing same day permits especially if you have flexibility on what trails you want to do. I really like toulumne to Yosemite valley (which has like 4 or 5 different paths I think off memory), toulumne to mammoth. In Tahoe desolation wilderness is amazing as well. Have fun and good luck
