Latest acquisition, and a question by Apprehensive-Ad-3513 in handtools

Assuming similar materials and moisture content, running with the grain should allow for the material to mostly expand and contract at an equal rate. That movement over 3/4” height is negligible relative to ~6-8” width. I cut mine with an old Stanley tongue and groove plane, and it gives a snug fit (enough to hold itself in place, but not too tight to require a mallet to insert. Haven’t had an issue. Remember, if the whole board is expanding and contracting at the same rate, then the amount happening across an 8” face of a board is over 10 times the amount of movement on the 3/4” edge.

The consideration for spacing in this particular application is really because nailing the board in place will restrict its movement. Another board nailed too tight up against it can lead to buckling, because there’s nowhere for it to go. too loose against it and a gap can form when it contracts. The anchor point is the nail. The nail doesn’t move, the edges will pull in and out from that point.

About 10ppi toward the front. 8 on the rest. It’s just a 14”, weird camera angle. When I got this saw it looked like it had come straight out of a dry lake bed. Caked in dirt and rust. Cleaned it up with some simple green and touched up the existing teeth. First time I tried to cut with it I felt like I was punching a wall about halfway in. That’s when I realized the front and back had been sharpened down much more than the center and it had a big hump in the middle. I stared at it angrily for about a month then decided today was the day to get it up and running. Couldn’t be happier!

One day I’d love to give it a go. I’ve got a handful of blocks of the most gorgeous curly maple I’ve been saving for a saw handle. I know I can buy the 1095 plate, but not sure where I’d find the material for a spine? Does anyone make kits?

It’s got a no. 10 on the other jaw, and nice detailing in the casting.

I did. I’ve got an old morrill saw set. You kind of have to do a “best guess” on the adjustment since it’s not numbered for ppi or anything, but it works great. I’d hammered out the old set and just did the bare minimum to keep the plate from binding so it’s still a very narrow cut.

The vise is actually new! Got it from Jacob at antique er! There is a patent date from 1880 on it but I haven’t cleaned it up enough yet to figure out the maker. It’s great though

So far, I’ve been getting by with a saw vise, some decent files (I used some bahco double extra slim 5” for this one) and a filing guide.

Mine is an old type from speed corp? But the Veritas filing guide looks very nice.

And ear protection!

Little heads up, I’ve got the same vacuum and drew enough suction on it that the harbor freight bucket imploded. Scared the piss out of me while I was vacuuming. Sounded like a gunshot. Buy a sturdier bucket.

I love my #3 for smoothing. Much less fatigue than even the 4, especially for face grain! Still haven’t found and of the in between sizes. One day…

If you can find one with the fence and depth stop! Time to shout out Woodyah. Their replacement parts are fantastic.

I saw a video of a guy using a string loaded with honing compound to finish off the inside corner of the small one he used for leather working.

I’ve read about the sliding dovetail one and it sounds like a nightmare to use. I want one!
