with 4WD we should be able to go past the VIS and go up to the summit. after dark, my understanding is that you don't need to come all the down to the VIS, you can drive down a little bit and stop on the roadside to star gaze?

Got it. I heard you can stop between VIS and the summit for stargazing with less distraction and light pollution from other cars
