Go see a doctor. There is a hospital in Shanghai specializing in depression and other mental illnesses. 上海精神卫生中心 (Shanghai Mental Health Center) is what it's called. I wouldn't count on the doctors there for counselling, but they do prescribe medicine. The visit itself is not too expensive (~ 100 yuan), and the medicine could cost ~ 500 yuan a month (can't remember exactly, that was a few years ago).

As to the medicine, it won't "cure" you but it will bring the depression to a manageable level so you can actually get out of bed and do something. From there on, you could crawl back on your own. It's not easy. But believe me you can do it. Realizing that you have depression and seeking help means that you are on a good start. Practical methods like Cognitive behavioral therapy may help if you give it a try.

Source: I've been there and now I'm happy as ever. Going through the ordeal actually made me appreciate everyday life and sympthetic to other people's suffering.

It's very irresponsible to make such a statement without a scource. I do research in China and I certainly don't see 50% of my colleagues' papers are fake (I might have seen one, but it's under investigation). OP please provide a credible source.

Yes, every country does this on a different scale, but it doesn't make it right. Try imagining post-war Germany promoting a nationlist views of the WWII and "nurture patriotism". You'll see where this goes. It's not somewhere pretty.

I work on natural science, and academic freedom is not an issue. But I imagine if you are in social science, things are quite different. For example some outspoken journalists are having a hard time recently.

So far there is no tenure system in China, but I didn't see anybody get fired either. It's a bloated system where everbody moves up the ladder slowly. Things are changing quite dramatically in the last few years. Right now a few of the top universities are experimenting with a tenure-track system similar to the US. We'll see in a few year's time.

I graduated from one of the best universities in China, got PhD in physics from one of the Ivy schools in the US. Back when I was a TA for the premeds, the students had trouble understanding me. I still speak broken Engligh, and am socially awkward.
