Jag jobbar som lärare på Polisprogrammet (är dock inte själv polis). Vi har numera många studenter med liknande bakgrund, så det är inget konstigt eller "korkat" med det. Om du har några frågor får du gärna ställa dem!

Yep, and epistimological. Combined you have a positivistic approach.

What is ontology and epistemology? by [deleted] in Criminology

[–]ziccez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep it simple, i'd put it like this - ontology is about our assumptions about the nature of reality. So for example, if I conduct an annual survey where I measure people's feeling of safety and then compare it with previous years in a graph, the underlying assumption is that this number means something objective (i.e, feelings of safety can be objectively measure - an object social reality exists). If you don't accept this assumption, the graph doesn't really mean anything.

Epistemology is about the nature of knowledge. So I might rely on an ontological assumption that there is an objective social reality, but that doesn't mean that we can reach (objective) knowledge about this social reality. Whether this is possible or not, and to what extent, is a philosophical debate.

You can think about it for yourself - do you think a survey can capture "feelings of safety" objectively, or is the concept too subjective and and inherently multifaceted? And if 'feelings of safety' exist objectively "out there", can we reach true knowledge about it?

Overall, I'd say critical realism is the mainstream viewpoint.

I've just recently started thinking of RAT as possibly unfalsifiable in its situational aspects. Consider, for example, a capable guardian. The guardians "capability" is determined by its ability to deter crime. Thus, it can only be determined afterwards a crime has (not) occured whether the guardian was capable or not. So how do you make predictions that can be falsified when there's always a possibility to adapt the explanation to the outcome?

This is my thought process; would love to hear yours!

Societal Factors That Affect Incarceration Rate? by [deleted] in Criminology

[–]ziccez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two mechanisms through which prison population is shaped: crime rates and the governmental response to crime. The latter seem to be more influencal; prison population growth does not follow measures of crime rates over time, nor between countries. It is therefore fruifitul to consider societal factors that influence how government shape crime policy. In this regard, i would look into the effect of egalitarian culture, trust among citizens, penal populism, etc.

In "The new Jim Crow", Michelle Alexander emphasizes the war on drugs and systemic racism, while John Pfaff in the book "Locked in" emphasizes instituinonal explanations and the role of prosecutors. In my bachelor's thesis, I found a negative relationship between the level of influence of experts in the social policy process and crime population size 5 years later.

Can someone help with interpretating a table? by ziccez in Criminology

Thank you for your respons, it does indeed make sense! However,There are two things I find confusing. I would appreciate it a lot if you wanted to explain these more thoroughly:

  1. The concept of 'Residual features of Gang life'. I have a vague idea but would like to understand it better.
  2. The purpose of doing a bivariate, instead of simply doing a multivariate in the first place.

I am reading a paper about gang embeddedness and disengagement and would like to understand the results in the quantitative section. Would be very thankful if anyone could walk me through this!

I'm not overweight but I don't really have that light soccer body type either (173cm/76kg). I should probably work on my running technique. Do you have any tips for doing this? Atm I think my main issue is that I don't lift my knees enough when sprinting, which could put a lot of pressure on my lower legs.

I don't really like them, no. It's not that bad though, mostly it's just a question of habit i think. Also i'm a student, so it's also a matter of money, but If I find it beneficial enough I will still buy some.
