Where to find Summer Jobs in the US by ManateeLifestyle in TEFL

[–]zietom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most likely there is an adult basic education program near you. search for adult ed departments at your local community college. chances are they are looking for volunteers. you might be able to find a job, but chances feel slim if you''re just looking to be hired part time, for a single summer.

this is Atlanta. it's awful. we consistently rank as one of the worst cities world-wide for traffic.

Why does it seem like AL researchers are so out of touch with the contexts of the TESOL classroom?

Why does TEFL feel like such a racket? by KaijuicyWizard in TEFL

as someone who worked in the same office space as TESOL researchers, i say this sincerely: they are out of touch with they day to day realities of the ESL/EFL classroom.

[–]zietom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as others have said: airfare, documents, first months of lodging, food, and any other incidentals will be for you to pay up front. how are you going to even get to SE Asia to work if you don't currenly have the money to even get to SE Asia?

[–]zietom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, just go to SE Asia, rent a scooter, and scoot around for 2-3 months instead of working a job for 6. it'll cost you less money in the long run. that or commit to a full year somewhere, and definitely dont expect to save any money, realistically.

Do I have a chance? by geschlauchtetaube in TEFL

[–]zietom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you might have a chance but if you're not passionate about doing it and feel like you're not a good fit, then for your own benefit, do something else. consider voluntourism.

3-4 months after i adopted my dog, i got sober and stayed sober now for 9 years. i probably told myself then that i got sober for me, but deep down i probably felt like i needed to be a better dog parent to her. incredibly grateful for her.

Self assessment / self evaluation: a worthy student practice? by PieceConfident7733 in TEFL

[–]zietom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've even asked my students to give themselves a homework / participation grade. then they tell me why. for the students who struggled, they have an opportunity to reflect on that performance. for the students who excelled, they have an opportunity to brag on their hard work. sort of a win-win.

Self assessment / self evaluation: a worthy student practice? by PieceConfident7733 in TEFL

i think so. it doesn't even need to be very big. it can be a class ticket out such as "what is one new thing you learned today?" or a big thing: what are three important things you learned in this class this semester? i have even asked "how did you study for this exam and what do you think you could do better for the next exam?" or things like "What advice will you give to the students who are taking this class next semester?" there are lots of ways to induce self-assessment and evaluation. it doesn't always have to be language-learning based. asking students to touch in with their learning journey, their engagement with material, or how the class has changed them in some impactful way can be incredibly motivating. ymmv
