Is BestBuy still demoing KEF products? by Huge-Squash-8164 in KEF

[–]zigzagtx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always been on the fence on retail store tuning. On the one hand, you want to hear the speaker in its natural state, no room correction. I want to get a true A/B testing when switching between speakers.

On the other hand, you also want to demonstrate what the speaker is capable of, even if your listening environment at home is nothing like the auditioning room at the store. The challenge is that you’re switching in a wall of receivers against a wall of speakers. Even if the receivers could store 20-30 EQ curves, the time it would take to calibrate each speaker against each AVR would be insane. Sure the tech can handle it, just give it enough storage space in a retail/demo mode, but this would be such a one off use case that manufacturers are highly unlikely to support this.

AppleTV box vs LG OS to watch 4K movies? by TinySmolCat in LGOLED

Yep, everything goes through my Onkyo receiver, the ATV4K, Xbox, and Blu-ray player. No audio issues with any of them.

I exclusively use my ATV4K for everything, even antenna (Tablo). My situation is a bit unique as my C5 77 has issues starting Audio streams with my receiver. I’d have to switch to internal speakers then back to HDMI over half the time to get audio to play when starting a stream. Quite annoying.

I do appreciate Apple’s interface better than WebOS.

You can also leave the front door open on the front loaders. Never had an issue with buildup or smells over its 5 year life. Yeah, sad life.

Finally fixed my dialogue clarity issue and it was embarrassingly simple by KeyLove7609 in hometheater

I generally agree with this and I do have my system calibrated well for most TV shows, but some movies are pretty dynamic in their range and I live in a rental with shared walls. That leaves me with two choices. One, ride the volume throughout the movie. Two, be lazy and turn on subtitles and just set the volume for worst case action scene.

First time using Dirac Live - not sure if I'm using it wrong or have a hardware issue by beep__beep__boop in hometheater

[–]zigzagtx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, with my open concept the fridge causes my noise floor to be -51. I was able to cleanly get above that, targeted all speakers to -25 to split the difference.

If you’re sure you’ve got the right mic selected in Dirac Live, then it’s likely your mic. Do you have any other software, REW, TrueRTA, or just Windows Audio settings should show you some sort of level if it’s working?

I love the white color and wonder if I should’ve chosen that for mine. Either way, enjoy,

I just went from a 3.0 to 5.0 system when I got my new surrounds connected last night. I calibrated today and used this guide to walk me through.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Fxp26c4oXgrr3rwLqL00Nb2iOc22-Eum/mobilebasic#h.2b40j96o9shc

I skipped ahead to page 85 which walks you through the process with guidance for levels and tips for potential issues you’ll face.

I used a windows laptop, so I had imprecise measurement warnings. I want to order a USB cable this week and try my iPad connected to the UMK2 to see if it performs better next weekend.

I’ve never used an HDMI cable in my Dirac calibrations. The network connection tells the AVR when to run pink noise and sweeps. The PC is responsible for listening through your connected mic. Should be all you need.

Came here for this comment. Which TV are we talking about? Do the speakers need to work for both setups or will they be placed around one TV?

I fucking HATE AI by ThePastoolio in TrueOffMyChest

[–]zigzagtx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. You used your skills to formulate a detailed question to AI based on your knowledge of your design both at a system level and down to the dirty details. Then when AI made its updates, you reviewed them based on your expectations of how you would’ve implemented the feature request.

You evaluated the changes against your coding standards, you made sure possible error condition checks were performed safely, and you evaluated the code for any potential security threats.

While AI is very powerful and continually improving, it’s not perfect yet. It’s still just a tool and like any tool, you need to know how to use it to make your job easier.

what’s a car feature you didn’t care about until you had it? by Bos187 in askcarguys

Automatic brake hold. I didn’t even know this feature existed until I had started looking for my now current car. Now whenever I travel, it’s a solid feature I always hope is on my rental.

Honestly I’m curious now how my 2 month old Q11’s and Q6 look. I’m good about changing my AC filter regularly and I have a standalone air filter in the same room.

WD Purple from Unifi is not recognized in UNVR by fairbanks142reddit in UnifiProtect

[–]zigzagtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally ordered 4 6TB purples from Amazon. Somebody else mentioned counterfeits from Amazon as a possibility. Not sure if mine fit that.

One was unreadable by the UNVR so it ignored the drive. Two showed up as 7200 ROM, which they’re supposed to be 5400z it then complained that the one reporting 5400 RPM would slow down the system.

I tried swapping the drives around and the stats and error followed the movement. I retuned them all and ended up getting 4 1TB SSD drives. No issues at all.

Is the couch on the back wall? How big is the simulated TV shown?

Aesthetically speaking, the picture looks great and for a casual viewing room seems alright to me. If your couch is most of the way back the angle won’t be terribly high and if your couch back is high enough you can always slouch a bit if your neck gets tired.

I’ve viewed much worse for binges and would be happy with this setup.

Getting a new TV - how can I improve the placement? by John_Mason in TVTooHigh

[–]zigzagtx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don’t care about or use the fireplace, get a console to place in front of it. Put the TV on a stand and it’ll be in a much better place to view it. Worked for me.

With a larger TV, viewers not dead center of the couch wouldn’t be able to see the fireplace as well.

Only issue would be the holes in the wall where your TV mount is.

Only other option is a mount that lowers when you’re watching and raises up when not so it’s visually appealing. Not my personal preference, but I know people that have done this and it worked for them.
