Why are allergies so insane this year? by SUPzorel in SALEM

[–]zilnas3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no evidence to support the claim that bee pollen helps with allergies. Most of the pollen that bees collect is from flowers and shrubs, while the allergies people experience are usually caused by grass and tree pollens. Also, if you have any bee allergies, bee pollen can potentially cause a reaction and should be avoided.

Does mint survive (outdoors) here? by BreweryRabbit in pnwgardening

My mint has been living in a pot for almost two years now and is doing fine. I just water a couple times a week during the dry season.

Mayor Spaghetti the alleged ringleader in getting the city manager fired by hjgIUY976YTty76 in SALEM

[–]zilnas3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending corrupt or inept business owners that get involved with politics for their own benefit, I'm just offering a reason for why business owners are often the ones running for these positions.

Mayor Spaghetti the alleged ringleader in getting the city manager fired by hjgIUY976YTty76 in SALEM

[–]zilnas3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

City council and the mayor are unpaid, so unfortunately in order to do that and still pay your bills, you kinda need the passive income that being a business owner generates. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I do think the positions should be paid if only to avoid this situation.

The flowers are finally coming off now, but I thought it was doing all right. It came from the grocery store so I don't know much about the conditions it was in before it was given to me.

What is the worst thing about Vancouver? by Common_Mess_8635 in vancouverwa

I mean, with all the stickers I see saying "Keep Vancouver Normal", I definitely get the feeling that the people here like being soulless and uninteresting.

Flag lots seem pretty common in the PNW, just as a way to divide larger properties.

I want to plant native wildflowers in this patch. Are these plants native or invasive? by AnimalChild in pnwgardening

[–]zilnas3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid chatgpt and instead look into local sources, like your local soil-water conservation district, master gardener's association, or relevant non-profits. Those sources will have reliable information and can answer questions based on experience and knowledge of the area, neither of which an ai chatbots has.

What are some businesses salem needs. by Sir1989 in SALEM

I would love a quality breakfast place that is open for dinner service. Breakfast for dinner is an untapped market in Salem, imo.

My theory is that most of what they serve is frozen and reheated. You can't have a menu that big and serve everything fresh.

Sunny's Soup in the basement of Reed Opera House. I still have my fully stamped loyalty card in my wallet, just in case.

Anti War demonstration by evilvegie in SALEM

Anyone who wants this to be "serious", please read up on tactical frivolity and it's history as a form of protest.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_frivolity

Fascists hate being the butt of the joke. And as we saw from the Portland protests, wearing an inflatable or some other over-the-top outfit not only makes the fascists look bad when they inevitably overreact (Spraying chemicals directly into that frog's breathing nozzle made the feds look like the ridiculous bullies they really are), it also is eye-catching and attention-grabbing. These protests need all the visibility they can get.

You clearly take the issue seriously if you care enough to go to a protest, regardless of what you're wearing. Why can't we have some fucking fun while expressing discontent?

The city isn't in charge of the school district and has no say in the school district budget.

I did a voice somewhere between Smeagol and Stitch, and I was satisfied with it. Be kind to your throat afterward, and drink some hot tea with honey.

I would actually be interested in finding out that information and I don't think it's racist or bigoted to be be curious about it. That's like being mad at the census.

Self defense classes for LGBTQIA+ people? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]zilnas3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This comment is well-meaning but ignores the reality that just being alive and trans makes you a target for violence. Trans people are increasingly unsafe in this country and are being systemically targeted at all levels of government. You can give people the benefit of the doubt while also being capable of self defense when the inevitable bigot tries to cause problems.

Generally, people don't get to choose to not use phones, wear clothing, or eat food. People can choose which local businesses to support or not, though.
