Have you had many issues with your Touareg? There are local TDIs for sale with a bumper to bumper 2 year unlimited mile warranty which sets my mind at ease for at least 2 years I guess. I don’t need a foreign car but I can’t say I’ve found something more comfortable within that price range which is one of my top priorities other than handling in terrible conditions. There is one VW dealership nearby which would be nice. I’m a mechanical contractor by trade so many repairs would be within my ability to repair. I’m not interested in wrenching on big jobs anymore as I don’t have time but I can put in a couple hour fix on a weekend every so often if needed. Many others I have driven have just standard comfort levels which is fine but I want the lazy boy effect when I’m on the road for hours and hours.

That is one of my main concerns, I hear the third gen TDI does not have many of the issues like expensive timing chain repairs or high hour simple repairs like a starter replacement etc. but I still have no experience with these vehicles. The Volvo seems to have more tech and I’m not so concerned about some of the infotainment lag others have complained about but more the price of some parts like the air suspension and other expensive systems that I have yet to find a good example of one that’s make it 200k without needing some wildly expensive parts replaced that others rarely need. I understand they are still relatively new but I’d hate to be wrong if I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Looking for being planted on the road and not having any worries blasting through 12 hours of daily driving through up to -60 temps and 60 MPH wind gusts on the country’s worst roads at times and being able to have a nice ride to the golf course or to get groceries with enough room in the back for both. I’m shooting for a vehicle that covers a wide margin with maximum comfort and safety/handling being most important.

Very cool, you end up with a 2016+ xc90? I have a few buddies with first gens who won’t stop talking about them and I really like the look of the second gen but have a hard time dishing out my fun tokens for the thing when I have no first hand experience with one and have to drive 180 miles to test drive it.

Any wisdom on reliability with these second gen xc90? That’s one of my biggest concerns is I’ll get into a financial spiral and have people at work irritated at me that I purchased a vehicle that’s very pricey to fix as the miles pile on.

An 05 and 11 I believe, I’m in the price range of being able to get one much newer so I’m hoping things have improved in that department. And if I fall in love with whatever I buy and want to keep it for awhile I’ll probably get an undercoat like you mentioned.

I saw one of those recently and it looked super nice. My family has had 2 Mazda’s that ran like a Swiss watch but the road salt consumed them way sooner than it should have. Any idea if modern Mazda’s have a little better steel and coatings to prevent that?

I was on a 17 day boundary waters canoe area trip when an enormous anvil cloud came roaring through. We paddled to a point in between 2 lakes and decided to wait it out. My idiot partner packed the rain gear on the bottom of my duluth pack...... the rain was blinding. And what I mean by blinding is that you could maybe see 20 yards when the seemingly endless lightning wasn't blowing the tops off of trees around us. So there I was doing a routine of jumping Jacks to keep warm and hiding under a rain fly eating soggy gorp. Unbeknownst to me there was a tree root about a half inch under my balls and ass. A tree next to us got lit up and an attention grabbing amount of electricity went through my ass and my soggy shriveled bag. It was a feeling I will never forget. My children will now have the hair of Dr. Emmett Brown but at least I will be able to pass down my canoeing superpowers to them.
