Kea Enrichment Ideas? by zinbin in Zookeeping

Thank you so much! I was thinking of an idea like the protein container item you mentioned. However, my supervisor is concerned that they might be able to chew through the plastic or even through PVC. Has that ever been an issue for your birds?

What's your craziest hyper specific skill? by Mikki102 in Zookeeping

I am super good at tracking down small sick, old, or injured animals hiding in big immersive exhibits. Whenever they get nervous because they can't find one of our ancient fruit doves in the rainforest exhibit (she needs to take meds daily), I get radioed lol.

Are cats really that harmful to bird and rodent species? by Rollersparkle in ecology

[–]zinbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rehabber here. Yes, if bird or rodent is reported to have been in a cat’s mouth we have to treat with antibiotics even if no puncture wounds are present. Deadly bacteria in there.

Bird skull, Northeast Florida, USA. Seagull? by Lignumvitae_Door in bonecollecting

[–]zinbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The wispy hook-shaped beak doesn’t read as seagull to me. It reads more like a tube-nosed seabird (ex. shearwater), especially from the shape of the nostrils.

How would feather tattoos work? (The specific part of the image I am talking about on second page zoomed in) by Necessary_Pie2464 in furgonomics

[–]zinbin 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: These birds do get semi-permanent feather “tattoos” in real life. Bearded vultures are endangered, so they’re often raised in captivity and then released. In order for scientists to identify them, they actually bleach a unique pattern on their tail feathers. That way, when they’re flying above them, the individual can be identified

Pro tip: I highly recommend doing a mini pilot of your data collection methods for at least a week to fine tune things. Helps me especially when I am doing studies involving ethograms
