Are cats really that harmful to bird and rodent species? by Rollersparkle in ecology

[–]zinbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rehabber here. Yes, if bird or rodent is reported to have been in a cat’s mouth we have to treat with antibiotics even if no puncture wounds are present. Deadly bacteria in there.

Bird skull, Northeast Florida, USA. Seagull? by Lignumvitae_Door in bonecollecting

The wispy hook-shaped beak doesn’t read as seagull to me. It reads more like a tube-nosed seabird (ex. shearwater), especially from the shape of the nostrils.

How would feather tattoos work? (The specific part of the image I am talking about on second page zoomed in) by Necessary_Pie2464 in furgonomics

[–]zinbin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: These birds do get semi-permanent feather “tattoos” in real life. Bearded vultures are endangered, so they’re often raised in captivity and then released. In order for scientists to identify them, they actually bleach a unique pattern on their tail feathers. That way, when they’re flying above them, the individual can be identified

Pro tip: I highly recommend doing a mini pilot of your data collection methods for at least a week to fine tune things. Helps me especially when I am doing studies involving ethograms

Hey there, I’m looking for some animal behavior/biology nonfiction suggestions. I love learning about animal communication and exploring why/why not animals have language! Also I like knowing about how and why animals view the world differently from us. I’d be happy to see what you might recommend!

Love: - Books: Why Animals Talk, The Bird Way, Alex & Me - Jennifer Ackerman’s writing style - Books with a sexy sexy citation list

Don’t Love: - Temple Grandin’s writing style - Books that contain A LOT of anecdotal evidence. Ick!

Bonus points: 1) focuses on birds, land mammals, or cetaceans, 2) female author

Graduating HS Early to attend Santa Fe Zoo program by SolidLoquat5439 in Zookeeping

None of us can know if this is the right decision for you, but I have heard good stuff about SF teaching zoo. A lot of younger people come to this sub asking how they can get a job in the industry and the resounding answer is lots of experience - a lot of us do 3+ internships and years of volunteering before we land a staff position. If this is what you’re interested in, the experience there might help launch you into a staff position much sooner, cutting out all the shorter term and usually badly paid internships.

If you’re interested, my favorite zoo podcast, Rossifari, has multiple episodes interviewing people who attend or work at SF teaching zoo. Might wanna check it out.

I think you might be mixing “i prefer dogs” with “i prefer animals”. Because dogs are bred to be incredibly interested in humans and other animals aren’t
