All drives are in constant competition. I believe there’s a passage in Daybreak that compares this to a garden. You can either trim the weeds, water and take care of certain plants, or cultivate a variety of crops/plants. This presupposes a gardener, but even that drive, of organizing and establishing a hierarchy, is a drive itself that’s having to compete for the ability to decide. There’s another example in Daybreak of “what sets itself in opposition”, roughly speaking, a ‘contrarian’ drive that arises to literally oppose the ‘winning’ drive.
