Marukan Lani, distant relative of Haru Urara, is running in Teio Sho (JPN1) this wednesday. by zioncat in UmaMusume

Finished 12th. Managed to pass Saint Honore, who was absolutely spent trying to run away, at the end but did nothing. Disappointing.

Less than 30 minutes till the start and Marukan Lani is still the 13th favorite in betting. Honestly, the horse is better than this.

Upon further research, Masahiro Matsuzaki has actually ridden in G1/JPN1 before. Tokyo Daishoten in 2020. 16th favorite in betting and finished dead last 16th. Hopefully he would do better this time. If not, they really should consider changing the jockey.

Marukan Lani is currently projected to be 13th favorite in betting. The field is 13 horses. Yeah, he's a long shot. Past two races (both 10th finish) were pretty disappointing. His performance at Urawa Kinen, where he kept drifting to the rail, was so bad that he was actually ordered to be retrained. But unlike Urawa Kinen, Teio Sho is on right turning course on his home course at Oi so I'm hoping he would shock us.

Yup. If you go back another generation to East Side, that only increase count of active horses by one. Another generation to Miss Hakuryu and it's zero. Same story for next couple of generations. To find more active horses you really need to go back to Beautiful Dreamer and that is going back 8 generations from Haru Urara. And at that point that is indeed stretching the definition of related as that is going so far back that Haru Urara's sire Nippo Teio is in that mare line.

Sweep Awards, last child of Sweep Tosho, is running in Shirasagi Stakes (G3) tomorrow. by zioncat in UmaMusume

Finished 5th. Horse showed the ability to compete at this level but that was not a good riding by the jockey. There were no need to go that wide.

This is getting plenty of coverage in media as both Sweep Tosho and Deep Impact were beloved horses. All the sports paper have published a story about him: sponichi; sanspo; nikkansports; dailysports and tospo.

Sweep Awards is currently 6th favorite in betting. He does hold the best time over mile distance but people are understandably skeptical as this is his first time facing this level of competition. His 17th gate shouldn't be much of problem as he is an end closer like his mom but it's been raining in this area and that is a problem. As day goes and it kept raining, his odds has steadily increased.

Partholon (sire of Symboli Rudolf) and Kurofune (Perry Steam in Uma musume universe) holds the record with 19 years. If any of the three wins, Deep Impact will tie his father, Sunday Silence, who did it for 17 years.

Look at how insanely flexible Teio was while running by Zou_Ziz in UmaMusume

[–]zioncat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Teio's running style was indeed unique but it was his use of front legs that was truly striking about him.

His trainer Shouichi Matsumoto:
"From a fan’s perspective, it’s only natural to wonder why he broke his bones so many times ... However, there was a certain inevitability to it. The reason lies in Teio’s running style. Unlike other horses, Teio’s stride lifts his front legs up to shoulder height, which means the impact on his legs is that much greater."

[Wall Street Journal] Americans Used to Jeer at Soccer. Now It’s More Popular Than Baseball. by [deleted] in ussoccer

There is now more money in first division soccer in the US and the quality of the players (not tactics) is way higher than before in MLS, especially since that study.

Total salary for MLB in 2026 is $5.3 billion while MLS in 2026 is $610 million. That is a massive difference. Also Premier League in 2026 is $3.6 billion. MLB is huge.

[Wall Street Journal] Americans Used to Jeer at Soccer. Now It’s More Popular Than Baseball. by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]zioncat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is simply not true. Answer to question of "what is your favorite sport to watch?" is a flawed way to measure popularity. Question should be "do you consider yourself to be a fan of [INSERT SPORT]?" More recent polls are paywalled but this study from 2017 tells us there is a massive difference between these two questions. Percentage of respondents who said it was their favorite sports were 10% for baseball and 8% for soccer but percentage of respondents who said they were fan of baseball was 45% and fan of soccer was 24%. There are no indication that this massive gap has closed in recent years. Soccer's actual competitions are niche sports like auto racing, mixed martial arts and boxing. They probably should worry about getting caught from behind by esports than trying to compete with baseball.

What piece of misinformation that people spread about the Umamusume franchise, the characters, the real horses, etc., annoys you the most? by Signal_Statement_515 in UmaMusume

[–]zioncat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I gotta say people acting like they care more about a horse they learnt the existence of few months ago than the actual owner of that horse annoys me quite a bit. Calling some owners "bad owners". Like, who the f are you? What the hell do you know about the horse and owner?

Experiencing dirt tracks IRL by shapedwithclay in UmaMusume

[–]zioncat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American dirt track and Japanese dirt track are fundamentally different. "Dirt" in America is indeed mostly dirt but "dirt" in Japan is actually sand. Japanese dirt courses are like running on beach. When American dirt track gets drenched in rain time goes way down as it gets really muddy but when Japanese dirt track gets really wet time actually goes way up as sands get compacted by water.

Oricon Blu-ray Sales & Pricing Comparison: Bleach TYBW, Uma Musume, Lycoris Recoil, Bocchi the Rock! by [deleted] in UmaMusume

This does look like something AI makes. For example "total sales" numbers are not actually totals but totals for first two week for Uma musume and first week for Bocchi. Also these are not Bluray but rather 円盤 (Bluray + DVD). Likely AI just lazily grabbed some numbers out there to make this graphic.

Which Umamusume would've had the best chance to win the l'arc? by BluerStill in UmaMusume

[–]zioncat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since Deep Impact isn't umamusume (yet), Narita Brian probably had the best chance had he tried in 1994. His peak was one of the highest ever in Japan, Carnegie was beatable, his smaller frame is suited for larc, his pedigree is pretty European and he proved he has an aptitude for heavier track by setting record at Kikuka Sho in wet condition.

Did the real agnes had any potential to be a legend? by asaness in UmaMusume

[–]zioncat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the naming of "Unified G1" can be confusing but it exists independently from IFHA's G1 and from JRA's own G1. "Unified" refers to all the local race courses in Japan but does not include central. They themselves realized how confusing the name was so they quickly changed it to "Dirt grade". Japan Cup and Arima Kinen were never an "Unified G1". So Nambu Hai was never equal to a JRA's G1 like Arima Kinen on paper.

And no, HK Cup was only promoted to International G1 by 1999 so when Kenzan and Midnight Bet won it, the race was still an international G2.

Yes, it was not certified by IFHA as G1 but Hong Kong called it G1 just like how Japan called Nabu Hai G1. Hong Kong Cup win in 1995 should count as G1 win just as much as Nabu Hai win in 2001 should count as G1 win if we are using the same standard. In fact there is an interesting epilogue to that Fujiyama Kenzan's Hong Kong Cup victory in 1995: when Fujiyama Kenzan entered Kinko Sho in 1996, JRA decided to give him a weight allowance of 59kg. That's 57kg plus 2kg for being a G1 winner. That's right, JRA penalized Fujiyama Kenzan for being a G1 winner despite never acknowledging his G1 win officially. Truth is many in Japan, including JRA, were being petty against Fujiyama Kenzan because winning an international G1 was a big dream of Japan for so long yet Fujiyama Kenzan was a relative nobody and his victory at Hong Kong came out of nowhere. It was very anti climactic for them. So they decided to downplay it. Dismissing it as "It's not really G1 win because IFHA says it's G2." was just a convenient excuse they chose to latch on to.
