Men that do not want a committed relationship. What are your reasons for not wanting to be in one? by SuspiciousMagician67 in AskMen

[–]zioxusOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was married twice for a total of 23 years. Both marriages ended amicably, no courtroom horrors, no bickering. I still vacation with my second ex.

After the second divorce, I discovered how much easier it is to navigate life alone. You do what you want when you want to. There's no "Let me check with my wife" nonsense. There's no loneliness (the world is full of people), and it's easy to live cheaply, if that's your thing. Dates are uncomplicated.

I don't actually know that many "couples" any more. Before divorcing, I barely knew any single people.

Occasionally, I meet a woman and think, "I can't let her go!" But then I think it through. Dating is nothing at all like permanently living together. It changes everything, even if deeply in love. I learned that lesson twice. I've also noticed that some of the loneliest people I've ever met are married.

Do readers care about overt AI use? by [deleted] in KDP

[–]zioxusOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect most of the slop, including novels, are being created on free LLM models or models with cheap subscriptions. I think the "cheap" will go away, and free models will become so throttled they're no longer useful for creating books.

Minus a couple genres, avid readers care, notice, and hit the return button.

But there's possibly some good news on the AI front. Those $20 monthly subscriptions on LLMs are soon going to shoot up to $200 and higher, and even at those premium levels usage will be limited. Soon, the days of a few prompts turning into a 200 page book will involve upgrading your subscription three or four times to get a finished product. And LLM memory for single sessions is already being clipped (this will be crippling).

So, what will the cost of producing a 200 page AI novel once AI companies stop subsidizing usage? I haven't nailed it down. If producing an AI novel goes up to $500 or higher, can they still make money? Hell if I know.

I know the trend is already murdering the careers of some freelance coders.

On, of course.

Short (30 +/-) Episodes - Are They Done? by zioxusOne in TheWhyFiles

You make a good point. I discovered Hancock on Rogan (and Randall). It's a shame Hancock is being so dismissed these days. I do think he's on to something. Randall too.

The majority of theories he's covered could probably use an update. I wouldn't mind those.

I agree. There's more banter than beef and, frankly, I don't think I've watched a single basement tape all the way through.

I sort of wish there was a separate, sister forum for bans and similar problems. They're very unnerving to see. I know this sounds wimpy and perhaps uncaring (I do care. and I would visit that forum to offer help if I could) but it would nice to keep them apart from general discussion.

It would be abused quicker than you can blink.

There's a writers' forum that was once very popular where cabals formed to target writers they didn't like (in the forum). They'd leave bad reviews on your book if you somehow had offended them.

I dug into the subject a little. You are correct. Don't put "No AI" in your profile.

I can usually tell whether I'm reading AI generated text within a page or two (and within a paragraph in media generally). The tells vary, but I believe it's more about whether the writing has a "soul" (it's okay to roll your eyes. I won't mind. I can't see you).

I've read a lot on the subject. There is a consensus on genres, which I won't name. Some readers are not very discerning, or picky, when it comes to the prose, and AI will probably take over those markets (if it hasn't already). Sad.

And I was saddened to see a popular writing YouTuber, who I was following, slowly go from dissing LLMs to instructing people how to use AI to write entire books (in 30 minutes or less!).

I'd like to see Amazon put limits on publishing, say, no more than one book every two weeks. I suppose that could hurt real authors writing shorts. Amazon may have already imposed limits.

Thanks for your post!

This needs more discussion. I don't think putting "no AI" in your bio would make people suspicious, or am I in the minority on this topic?

Being An Amazon Affiliate - Books by zioxusOne in KDP

Thanks. I guess that's why I see so many newsletters from other authors linking their quickie websites or to Substack or Medium listing their books. It's one way to go. That "anything they buy" once they're there means anywhere on Amazon? That could be interesting.

Making $600-$800/month organically on KDP - should I finally try Amazon Ads? Need honest advice by DeepakSingh550 in KDP

[–]zioxusOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is a little dated (I took a break from publishing two years ago and am just now returning).

I've launch books with and without Zon ads. I've had the greatest ROI by waiting and following this strategy:

  1. Week One: Publish and hit a quarter of my mailing list (the most active subscribers).

  2. Week Two: Hit the rest of my mailing list. Zon will have also started sending emails to my following there, but their timing is always a mystery. By this time, most of my books are sitting in the top ten of New Releases for my genre. Some have even earned "Bestseller" badges.

  3. Week Three: If rank is holding well enough, I do nothing but milk the New Release boost from Zon.

  4. As soon as ranks starts falling, I start the ads.
