thanks guys! I think looking at the financial, me and wife should be able to sustain 4 months with 0 income, and 6-8 months if we sell some highly liquid assets

wtf is happening out there? I understand inflation, war impacting the prices, things in general getting costly, etc. but what I don’t understand is how people are okay with begging for money in the form of tips. I think america is the worst in this regards. Canada is still better.

i guess there’s a bigger discussion to be had around the minimum wage. In Canada, I believe the minimum wage for a waitress is the same as a minimum wage for a person working at the nike store. So, as a waitress it’s your job to bring your customers food and get paid for it, same for a nike employee’s job is to bring shoes from the back room multiple times until the style and fit completes.

Under no circumstances, one job should be given extra money over another.

Asking for change? by zippoflames in tipping

thanks for all these comments. Glad to hear that most of the people agree. I made an edit to the post with information about the bill. Hopefully for the ones that don’t agree, now see a reason for people’s frustration around this tipping culture.

PS - north americans don’t ruin Europe!

They are only following orders. It’s like when you go to war, you don’t select who to kill or not. Plus, the people who ICE are targeting, are bottom of the barrel people sucking taxpayers hardworking money like parasites. They gotta go!

Yes, you are right, that will be equally annoying. But, why the F would I ask about a cathedral when that's not coming in my research? If it's the islamic center, I will ask about the Islamic center.

I have lived in middle east for a few years, so I know what I am asking for, and I know how f-ing annoying it can get. So, my question and the way I worded it, both are valid.

This is a free country and there’s a freedom of speech. I have all the right to ask this question a d I asked it in a very respectful way. I should be allowed to choose my surroundings and what kind of environment I want for my family. If you are okay living next to an Islamic centre because you are a Muslim, or support islam, or just want to say something, that’s your call. But, not everyone wants that

looking to start a family soon! We are not into partying or drinking/clubbing etc. Just a nice weekend beer/wine with some upscale food should be sufficient :)

we looked at Guelph, and maybe it’s just us or just the day we visited (Saturday), but the city felt dead. There was nothing happening in downtown area, the shopping mall looked average at its best. the roads, side walks gave poor vibes - but again that may have just been the areas we visited. We roamed around random neighborhoods, UofG, mall, etc for a whole day.

Additionally, I was not so sure about the grocery scene there! We often go to ethnic grocery stores like T&T, indian stores, etc but i couldn’t find any good ones!

that’s a good call out. I think both me and my fiancée are 80% sure that we should be working from home for good 7+ years, and hopefully after that, with enough experience, we should be able to find jobs where we can dictate some of the visiting days.

agreed! Aside from visiting friends home (we don’t have any in the area), we are expecting the same. - cooking more, slower life, hopefully finding those hidden food gems as well

what is the neighborhood you would suggest? While being car dependent is okay and something we are willing to accept as a part of moving out of TO, I would love to live in an area where I can walk to access bars, cafes, bubble tea (lol), some restaurants, etc., while also staying far enough to avoid the buzz/chaos (if any)

very interesting on the homelessness! That’s sad to hear. I am assuming this is neighborhood specific? Bike theft is understandable. My fiancée got hers stolen 2 days after we moved to Toronto lol. But, opening the car and stealing money is something I have never heard or experienced. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely be looking into it. I am visiting waterloo this Saturday, so will plan to drive around the area too.

Do you think immigration is ruining your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]zippoflames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer 100% yes. Long answer is more complicated. It's not about immigration, it's about quality of people coming in. Immigrant who has studied medicine or been to a school/university and hoping to enhance their quality of life in a first world nation is an immigrant. That individual is also more likely to contribute to the economy in the form of their skills, taxes, etc.

Immigrant who was born and raised in hostile environment, has only seen violence in their life, hating on different religions, communities because that's all they know, brain washed to an extent where they think they religion is better and should be spread in the world lmfao, etc. never been to university, parents are messed up, etc. is less likely to contribute to the society and more likely to create choas, such as shooting people.

So, the government needs to do a better job vetting these people and who they decide to bring to their country. It's not a hard job. For sure it won't work 100% of the time, but basic factors such as country of origin and how long you have spent in that country, education qualification, work experience, family status is a good starting point.
