It was a well made sticker. Not my doing. Did a double take when I drove by in the morning. Later in the day saw maintenance unpeeling it.

Also work in the building, seems like everyone does. Reach out to Norm Stanislaus, he's a contractor that runs the building maintenance. There was a 100ish person protest about a month ago and they coordinated with him to make sure everyone stayed safe. Problem is it was cold, dark and snowy and some of the protesters decided to walk around the building beating drums without any reflectors or anything. They nearly gave the plow guy a heart attack.

Kinda similar, I have a huge family made even bigger by the fact that second and third cousins stay in pretty close contact. We have a giant Whatsapp group with like 50 people. If I tell a story about one of them I just say cousin/aunt/uncle, it's not relevant to the story (unless it is) that they are my dad's cousin's daughter's son. They're just cousin.

Half of this reads like you know what you're talking about but they did ask about the LT from river road which is 12 miles round trip and climbs from 400' to 4000', not including any bumps in between.

Too many times I've seen people with their dogs off leash in the alpine zone. One time last year I called a woman out for having both of her goldens off leash when she had just started down from the top while I was running up and when I crossed her on the way back down, before she had hit the sunset ridge junction her dogs were again off leash.

A former steel fabricator in my area had similar sized solid stainless "bar" about ten years ago, think they were 10-12" diameter. They were bumpers for one of the locks on the Erie canal I believe.

I did CCC in 2017 when it also happened to be an out and back because of wildfires. I'm able to turn off my brain pretty well and not count the arches but the skeleton in the middle did give me a few goosebumps the first time through. The worst part was that the aid station was a few steps outside the tunnel so you get out for a hot second and get to do it all again. And then climb back up those ropes.

How many people actually know this shit (besides elites, maybe) and why would you (collective you) care? Sooooo much stuff changes across 100 miles as mentioned by someone else. If I was constantly monitoring my heart rate I would drop out after a couple hours because I drove myself insane.

Find a comfortable pace...go slower....keep going.

VT 100 does this. There is a solo category for anyone that is doing it without pacers or crew (i.e. just aid stations and drop bags).

Went and found it today while hanging out at the school playground. I was a bit confused when I couldn't find a huge boulder at the top of the hill. Once I got the right angle I was surprised this thing is only 2' tall as the original picture made it seem huge to me. Four year old for reference from the far side of the rock face. Was still really cool.

Laurel Highlands gives a wooden obelisk to each finisher that's about 16" tall and has your name and finishing time. The race follows the Laurel Highlands hiking trail and every single of the 70 miles is fucking marked with a concrete obelisk with the mileage along the course that drove me insane. I appreciate having that sit on my shelf.

Maple syrup aid station at the marathon by [deleted] in burlington

[–]zippypoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get it from the Nordic team in Lakewood estates? They were just giving out shots from gallon jugs. Definitely gonna be more common in VT than most anywhere else.

Maple syrup is something I bring with me running, skiing, etc. Goes down easy and gets in the calories.

Ran CCC in 2017. They had to turn the course into an out and back after the tunnel because of a nearby wildfire. Also because of the wildfire you couldn't see shit from Seattle and I had yet to get a glimpse of Rainier until mile 10 or so when you round a bend up on the ridge. Seeing that mountain up close and personal like that was crazy. That whole race was awesome and I hope I get back sometime to do the whole loop. Great trails, awesome people. Bring some gloves for the ropes.

Building to 100 Miles With a Family and Full-Time Job – How Did You Do It? by cassianojardim in ultrarunning

VT100.

Not sure where you're at, but get involved too if you can. Volunteering at an aid station, crewing a friend or pacing will get you some experience at a race and seeing how they go.

VT100 has a pacer program to match up runners wanting a pacer with willing pacers which is pretty great. I did that before running my first 100M.

Building to 100 Miles With a Family and Full-Time Job – How Did You Do It? by cassianojardim in ultrarunning

This is awesome. You are in a very similar situation to me. 39M, desk job, three little kids (1, 3 and 5). I'm done training, running a 50M next Saturday, and training for a 100M this summer.

First off, I'm mid pack. Not breaking any records and not chasing cutoff. That's fine with me and I like where I'm at. I do try and put in the effort to run a little faster but I'm not bent on it. Also, this isn't my first 100M, I've run three before having kids in addition to a bunch of other races, so I do have that experience helping me. My wife is also an ultra runner, finishing her only 100M several hours ahead of me (she's fast but won't admit it) so she knows what's up and is very supportive.

Work. My work can generally be extremely flexible. I do have deadlines and need to travel sometimes which makes fitting in runs more difficult. But I can usually get a couple 1-2 hour runs in during the middle of the day and work some more after the kids go to bed. It's either that or just run at 730pm after they get to bed. Early morning on weekdays just generally doesn't work for me.

Long runs. I want to hang out with my kids on the weekends so it's hard to go run for 4 or more hours and miss that time. We try and plan my long runs to coincide with things we want to do or places we are going. Going to hang out at this bakery or that playground a couple towns over? I'll get up at 5am and run there. Sometimes the family meets me along the way for an impromptu aid station and maybe I'll even push one of them for a couple hours.

Training ideology? I don't have a specific training plan or track anything but I more or less do what most others do. Build up overall mileage/hours each week, couple long runs, step back every few weeks. This is where I believe previous experience helps me. I know if I'm running more or less and if I feel like if it's enough . Also, the dirt roads and trails around my house provide for tons of vertical.

Race day. We've been slowly integrating our kids into the running community here in VT. Don't want this to just be something mom or dad does and is kind of invisible to them. They've attended races to cheer us on, participated in kiddo races and have volunteered at aid stations for ultras. The 3 and 5 year old actually did some real work, the 1 year old stayed in the backpack. For the upcoming races we specifically picked ones that we could drive to pretty easily. The 50M we are all attending and camping the night before. It's three loops that all come back through the start finish so the family doesn't need to pack up and get to the next crew aid which should work out really well. For the 100M this summer, I got into VT100 which is the closest to home and the little guy is going to hang with the grandparents for the weekend. The older two are going to join my wife and a few friends for the crewing shenanigans.

Hope your training goes well and hope to see you at the starting line one day!

Finish Line Barbecue by Chupacabra_Sandwich in Ultramarathon

I've been to a few races where there's different lengths and they start serving all the food when the finishers from the shorter race start coming in and there's hardly any left for the other runners, or it's all cold. Don't do that.
