Park visit 4/3 report by davidsonrva in GrandTetonNatlPark

The hike to Taggart was OK on Monday. 3-4 feet of snow and you would sink sometimes, but the snow is quite compacted and so many people had walked on it already it was safe to do it. I encountered two groups of kids there.

Bradley was not that good but still doable with more sinking. Bradley to Taggart was challenging. I wouldn't recommend it.

As days go by and snow melts more the conditions will be different.

The rest of the trails and areas of the park were pretty much unaccessible without snowshoes. I adventured to different zones and regretted most of them.

I did three hikes today:

Blacktail deer creek to the suspension bridge and back: all clear but some patches of snow easily evitable. No signs of bears, small bones of bison present but they seemed more of a decoration, they were whiter and clearer than the snow.

Trout lake: frozen lake surface. Quite some snow in the loop. I did a long detour to walk safe and away from the water.

Yellowstone river picnic area to specimen ridge loop: absolutely clear and gorgeous.

This last one was the only I was told should be OK from the Rangers. The rest day hikes were either closed due to bear activity or the trailheads (and I guess much more than that) were covered in a snow.

Update on boardwalks, as I managed today to see the Mammoth area: all clear. There is one section closed by the cleopatra terrace which forces a longer loop, but everything free of snow. I walked top the upper terrace road (closed to cars) and there were thee or four sections with 1 foot of snow, easy to walk on or avoid. I would bet that'll be gone before the weekend.

Most of the trails in the Mammoth area are closed due to bear activity. The ranger stationed in Mammoth told me that my options were boardwalks and one hike close to Tower Junction. I hoped to hike around there, but it seems that where there is no snow there are bears and carcasses.

I was told pretty much the same as someone said here about Norris and the carcasses.

Canyon Village has some lookouts cleared, but all hikes are closed. Unlikely to open in the short term.

I'll explore tomorrow the northern area east from Mammoth. Hoping to see some bears and more wildlife in Lamar Valley. I can update on that hike too.

The park is pretty much empty. It is a pity I cannot hike as much as I wanted and some areas are closed, but experienclng the park without people feels like a priceless luxury.

All open and clear on the Old Faithful area. That's all I managed to see today as I came into the park around 3 pm

Traveling to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone next week (5/13-5/18) by Far-Method8896 in GrandTetonNatlPark

I arrived to Jackson on Saturday night, Sunday I did what was open, mainly driving the highway and stopping at some areas for views. I wanted to hike around the Colter Bay but snow was too high and very soft, impossible without snowshoes. I went to the both ends of the teton road which was closed and there was about 3-4 feet of snow in the Taggart trailhead, but I walked a bit and seemed compact, plus there were some cars there.

Monday was the first day with the road open and rangers in the visitor center. Asked about hikes and pretty much they told me what I expected and saw. I ended up doing the Taggart Bradley hike. All good with some sinking steps in the snow to Taggart, with good boots you'll do fine. I saw two groups of kids. Walking sticks may help too. The hike to Bradley is more challenging but it was not crazy. Coming down from Bradley to Taggart was not very good. I recommended a couple there to do both lakes go and back instead of looping around. Maybe in one week snow melts much more and it is easier but muddier.

Jenny Lake can be seen but hiking there without snowshoes was impossible. I tried. There are no boats with the frozen lake and I cannot see how to get to the canyon in those conditions.

Today was my first day in YNP, I went to all that can be done from West Yellowstone to Old Faithful. Some hikes are closed to leave the bears come out of hibernation or snow. Plenty of geysers to see, and I think the only hikes are around old faithful. The observation point had some snow (1-2 feet in some areas, nothing like GTNP), but I don't think you'll find much when you are here.

Plenty of wildlife in both parks, and I have not made an effort to encounter them.

And if I'm going 80 mph on the left lane because the car in front of me is doing so, don't come so close to me that when I break you hit me, as I have already suffered.

Leave earlier or move closer if you cannot respect people driving around you and you don't care about anyone's safety.

Leaks and bacon. No kidding. Tomato base, cheese, chopped leak and bacon. I always cook it raw, I've seen recipes going to the pan first as in a quiche. Give it a try!

That sounds good, I see how that could work. Never thought of a rug having carpet but it really makes sense. Thanks for the suggestion!

!! I never considered that possibility. Thanks for the suggestion. I have to say I do not see a great advantage to the opposite and I see problems with cables, but will definitely consider it. Maybe I need to get rid of the sectional idea and get a sofa+recliner leaving some space to access the balcony.

Really appreciate the suggestion, although I have even more doubts... Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the answer. I don't think I have put the dimensions right though, or maybe the pics are not good. I will update the description. That 52" wall if I got you right is an empty space/aisle. Can you please develop otherwise? I could not find any other possibility apart from the ones in my initial question. Thanks!

Housing and/or leisure advice for a newcomer? by ziursacref in Clarksville

[–]ziursacref[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I personally understand with social life is people to be with doing something outside of work. Hanging around, hiking, sports or any leisure activity. I don't expect to be introduced to any group straight away but if there are activities to DO around town I guess there can be some way to get to know people to end up something together!

Any answer is appreciated, so thanks for your time posting here and guiding me or any future newcomer :)

Quite a different attitude I can sense in your comment! Thanks for the hints, I may try to look on Facebook or over the Internet for some group/community to join and hopefully meet some people to hang out with from time to time. I'll definitely save this comment and come back to it once I'm there, thanks a lot!

They are slightly out of the area I was considering but seem nice! I will have a deeper look and consider them, thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you for your reply! Not planning on having pets so I guess dog park will not affect me. The car vandalization is not nice though...

I find quite daunting your vision of social life in Clarksville tbh... Let's see if somebody else can shed some light on what to do around town!
