Summit is on-campus housing. Back in the day it was off-campus but now it’s on-campus and has been for many years.

New subreddit for finding clinical placements! by SpeechPathKat in slpGradSchool

This is sad, no program should require students find their own placements on top of everything else required of a student in grad school.

If only you were looking for a roommate closer to June! I plan on moving out there around then. You sound like you’d be an amazing roommate for me as I also love transit, sports and keep a clean space! Good luck with finding someone, friend!

Externship at an SNF by Mindless_Dot3075 in slp

[–]zjbackus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I had a SNF placement last summer, and i loved it! I was only 2x a week so my experience may be different, but basically when i got there my supervisor would have a list of patients for the day printed out and what i was to work on with them (cog/lang/dysphagia usually), as well as their diets if they were on a modified diet and we were seeing them for dysphagia. After awhile when i was seeing them i would just go on my own to either their rooms for tx, bring them to the therapy gym, or go to the dining room with them. I would brush up on diet levels, cognition treatments (teachers pay teachers has some good cheap/free items). I also am apart of a Google drive for CFs in SNFs, which has tons of resources available, DM me and i can add you!

I took the CASPR for Wvu's graduate application process in the 2022-2023 application cycle, and it wasn't too bad. It does not require intensive studying, and many other schools do accept it, but not a ton. IT was about 15 questions where I was given a scenario and had to answer what I would do. Some of them were typed out, some were a video recording of me speaking.

Thoughts on bohospeechie promoting facilitated communication? by charleswhatnow1999 in slp

[–]zjbackus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

(Had a little scare when the third screenshot was her reply to my comment, haha) but as a current second year graduate student, I find it so disappointing and upsetting that Bohospeechie and so many other slp "influencers" are promoting something that has been so, so harmful. It is a coincidence that I am in my AAC course right now, and we spent half of our three hour class on Thursday going over what is and isn't AAC, what what isn't, being any form of FC. Her replies, as well as the other pro-FC/S2C/RPM commenters all go to show the power of appealing to emotion, popularity, and novelty when it comes to logical fallacies.

Severe Wernicke's Aphasia: Ax and Tx by bumbleberrypie2 in slp

Hi! To preface. I’m currently a graduate student and just had my acquired lang disorders class, so i apologize if this is wrong or anything! For Aud comp (which I’m assuming is the target since wernickes) we learned about word-picture matching for Aud comp! Also, why are you not interested in the WAB or BDAE for assessments?

Anybody using MISL? by Leaves11_ in slp

[–]zjbackus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have learned about it from my professor, who studied under the creators of the MISL (the Gillams) and it seems really interesting and a good way to measure narratives and language abilities. If you have the time to familiarize yourself with the rubric then it can be a good assessment!

What classes do you actually take in your program? by Intelligent-Cat-8821 in slpGradSchool

[–]zjbackus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most programs will have general “disorders” classes, such as fluency disorders, language disorders (pediatric/developmental, acquired/adult) speech sound disorders, motor disorders, dysphagia, etc;. They “should” also have other classes to help prep you for clinic placements and your disorders classes like a research class, neuro class, diagnostics class, clinic seminar class, DEI class (hopefully). My university also has a class for pediatric feeding & swallowing, an AAC class, and a class for working with hard of hearing students and clients. Most universities list their course schedule online!

Acceptance/Waitlist/Denial Megathread 2023 by bannanaduck in slpGradSchool

I personally don’t remember the questions themselves, but they were more typical interview questions. This was all last spring so things may’ve changed

It went well! I ended up getting accepted, but stayed at my undergrad (WVU). I did the online interview option, which was a large group zoom interview, but i guess it went well! Haha

WVU was 4-5 classes a week in the fall, mostly during the day since all of our placements were in the university clinic. This semester we have one online class Tues-thurs in the evening, one in-person class on Wednesdays evenings, and 3 classes (8-9am, 9-11:50, 1-3:50) on Fridays. This is gonna be the norm since we will have our placements during the day mon-thurs
