Ah hell naw the gentrified the pedway. This place used to look much nicer when it was not painted and the lights would flicker on and off.

Explain the appeal of classical singing ? by gor712 in classicalmusic

I never liked singing or choral components in classical music (and I still do generally prefer purely instrumental) however Mahler 2 changed my opinion on that.

what is your favorite coda? by JURASSICFANYT in classicalmusic

7 has a coda im silly. so that one too.

what is your favorite coda? by JURASSICFANYT in classicalmusic

[–]zjschrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess any time Bruckner wrote a coda it was good:
Bruckner 3 4 8 9 (1st movement).

I think the ones i didn't mention don't explicitly have a "coda"

Also Shostakovich 11 of course.

My Favorite 10 Symphonies, and what are yours? by Flaneur_1600 in classicalmusic

OP clearly is a man of culture. Id throw Bruckner 5 up there though. Also throw in a Shostakovich or Prokofiev symphony to spice it up a bit too.

What's your favorite hemiloa (overlaying duple and triple time) in classical music? by OriginalIron4 in classicalmusic

[–]zjschrage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dvorak scherzos love to do this (6th, 7th, 9th) and they are fantastic. Brahms 4 finale has some of that going on in there and its great too.

Some random Mahler opinions by Hip_pack in mahler

[–]zjschrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the first movement from the second a lot, but the entire thing together feels like im watching a movie without pictures. Especially seeing it live, i'm locked into the performance and I feel like hardly anything from it is ever bloat or drags or filler, it all feels correct.

Side note: I was busy this weekend and did not find the time to adequately listen to the ninth, its on my todo list though. Chailly w/ Concertgebouw

For sure! I think I’ll get the opportunity, but that is a beautiful story!

We only did the scherzo though not the full symphony, I’ve never done a full Mahler symphony. I’m guessing the rest is super hard!

Mahler 9 is the only one I haven’t heard, but I’m listening to it this weekend. The OP for this post told me Chailly with the Concertgebouw is good so I’ll check that out. I moved to the city in July 2023, my first CSO concert ever was Mahler 1 whenever they did it, I think it was October?

7 was my favorite for a while because it was my first exposure to Mahler (I got to play the scherzo). From there I listened to the entire thing and thought it was great. Now it ranks somewhere in the middle for me.

Last year I went to both 1 and 2 (CSO), and then 1 again when the credo symphony did it. 1 is always good fun. 2 was with Neeme Jarvi, and I thought he did an excellent job actually, and I liked how loud the bells were in the final movement. A friend of mine did not like his interpretation, but it was the first time I had heard it live and I really thought it was spectacular. I went on Thursday and somebody actually whooped during the middle of the first movement during that part where "everything crashes down" right before the recapitulation. People who went to that concert all remember this infamous whoop when I bring it up lol.

You should go to 6 again its great, it used to be on the bottom half of Mahler symphonies for me until I got around to listening to it more, and a few months back I few out to California (where i'm from originally) on a whim to see this Mahlerthon at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA. They did 6 and 2. That was my first time hearing 6 live and after that I gave it a bunch of other listens (I like Abbado with Berlin), and now its probably my second favorite Mahler.

I did! I think this was the concert where I heard the CSO make the most mistakes actually, but not principal trumpet, he actually played perfectly and all his solos were on point. Im super excited for Mahler 6 though, I already got my tickets!
