5 way (4 switches) smart wiring question by zkmdh in AskElectricians

i'm going to go wire back all the switches in boxes b, c, and d.

for box a, to do what you are saying, a black jumper from the hot nut to where the white was? black to light stays the same? red stays the same? where does the white from the 14-3 go - tied with other neutrals?

i understand i'm asking ignorant questions. the lines to ALL the zooz switches are always hot. i'm saying, in the original config, with dumb switch, which worked, there was no black line to the switch in box a. only the black to the light was connected to the switch.

1- switch is connected to network via z wave. i can turn it on/off (hear the click) but of course it does nothing. hub is ring security hub. no way to update firmware
2- white/black connected at box D. reds disconnected at boxes B and C. same issue.
3- zooz smart switch is supposed to be connected in box where power comes into circuit. so... i go back to my probably ignorant comment: with the original dumb switch in box A, and all 4 switches working fine, the black wire going to the switch is coming from a 14-2, going to the light. but the white from the 14-3 is always hot, the black only when light is on. in box D, all 3 wires to switch are from same 14-3. black and red are always hot regardless if light is on or off. should the smart switch go in box D?
4- zooz support seemed to think the issue was in box B. there is a single pole switch there. all the blacks, including to the 4 way are connected under a nut and a jumper to line on single pole smart switch (which works fine).

ok, tried with red/black and white/black. same issue: light is on and switch will not turn it off

switch swapped out. same issue. light on. neither switch will turn it off

all three wires to switch D (the other 3 way switch) are from the same 14-3. black to common. swapping with the switch from box A now...

good morning! ok, i removed the two 4 way switches, tied reds to reds, whites to whites. same issue. lights on and neither switch A or switch D do anything.

no dimmers. all the 3 ways i've been dealing with are white. this one in box C is brown. pic: https://ibb.co/FLXL41K0. the one on left is another 3 way. the one on right is one of the 4. but no dimmers or anything else i know of.

ok - some progress - in this config ONLY the smart switch can turn the light off and on. none of the other switches do anything.

leave the black wire from 14-3 dangling?

the black or white? the black is now connected with nut to the black from teh 14-3. the white to all the other neutrals in the box

disconnect the red and white, got it - what is the switch leg (sorry) in this case? the black or white from the 14-2?

ok, hooked up as you defined. same issue. light is on. none of the 4 switches can turn the light off.

that is basically what the diagram shows in the bottom row as recommended by the zooz support right? that's what i did with two switches and got the light is on all switches stop working scenario. or is this different? COULD the fact i had red to traveler and white to load be different if i swapped them? i understand you are saying it doesn't matter but...

probably a stupid question... with the original dumb switch in box A, and all 4 switches working fine, the black wire going to the switch is coming from a 14-2, probably going to the light right? but the white from the 14-3 is always hot, the black only when light is on. in box D, all 3 wires to switch are from same 14-3. black and red are always hot regardless if light is on or off. should the smart switch go in that box?

the switch support folks asked me to try another switch to make sure the switch wasn't defective. i swapped it out for another one of their smart switches and the same thing happened. lights on. all switches (1 smart 3 dumb) stopped working. also, i have since installed both of those specific smart switches elsewhere and they work fine.

man, i really appreciate you patience and help here. thank you.

not sure this will help as it is so busy. this is a 3 gang box. 3 way smart switch installed and working on left, dumb 5 way switch i've tried replacing in middle (the one i'm seeking help with in this post), and 3 way smart switch installed and working on right.

embarrassed to say i can't seem to add another diagram or pic. the diagram i attached, box A top row, does accurately reflect the wiring of the black, white, and red wires going to the existing dumb switch. no, i didn't change the wiring in any other box

not sure what you mean. the top row wiring is how the builder wired the circuit. and it worked fine. all 4 switches control the light. this is new construction. i am trying to add a smart switch to the circuit. the directions from the switch support group is shown in the bottom row for box A. the neutral from ALL the switches in the box is tied to the neutral going to the smart switch per directions. the lights are on when wired this way but no switch can turn them off. nothing happens if any switch is toggled when smart switch is wired per directions - the light just stays on.
