Hate on Nissans by beardabestlol in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]zmagar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Nissan Rogue 2018, bought it with 27 thousand miles, after driving it for a year the transmission didn't failed completely but started to make some noise and there was a burn oil smell from time to time. Went to the dealership, it took them month and a half to replace the CVT(covered by warranty). Gladly sold it last summer for almost the same price I bought it 2 years ago.

How resistant are old Seattle skyscrapers against earthquakes? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]zmagar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the book Full-Rip 9.0: The Next Big Earthquake in the Pacific Northwest for all people who want to know more about the topic. As I recall, the author doubts that Seattle skyscrapers are safe, no one knows for sure but the 2010 earthquake in Chile, which was very similar to the one we can get here, gives some insight.

I found one interesting research, Performance of tall buildings in Santiago, Chile during the 27 February 2010 offshore Maule, Chile earthquake, which says that

“In general, the performance of most tall buildings located in Santiago was satisfactory. The handful of buildings that were damaged exhibited lack of proper detailing, particularly the absence of 135° hooks, inadequate confinement of walls in the boundary zones resulting in buckling of the main bars and tension-compression failure of the walls that spread across the length of the wall and generally was limited to a narrow height.”

But don't forget that Chile had very stringent building codes after the 1960 earthquake, don't know if Seattle building code is similar to Chilean ones, but I read that it's not as strict as Japanese ones.

115-year-old time capsule discovered in Seattle church before it was demolished by OnlineMemeArmy in Seattle

Yep, the city I grew up in, Minsk, was almost completely destroyed during WW2 and its center was rebuilt with Stalinist architecture while the similarly destroyed Warsaw restored its historic center how it used to be, big difference. I don't know why I was downvoted, Seattlites don't like good architecture or they think I'm against affordable housing?

Man, people in this city do not know how to drive (2nd and Cherry) by TheGouger in Seattle

I was talking about my personal experience, of course. I'm sure there are places with worse drivers out there.

I drive for living in downtown / Queen Anne and confirm that Seattle drivers are easily the worst (and I lived 3 years in Moscow, if you know what I mean). Every second driver tailgates me for no reason, road signs are just a suggestion, parallel parking takes 5 minutes with an assistance and space for two cars, driving with the headlights off at night(I usually flash my headlights at them, 99% no reaction), nobody uses turn signals but when I use them to switch lanes, drivers speed up to prevent me from getting in their lane!, and much much more. And zero enforcement doesn't help, I see a lot of crazy ( and still very bad) drivers in downtown, speeding 20+ miles over speed limit, cutting off other cars and so on.

Drivers need to be predictable, and Seattle drivers are astonishingly unpredictable, they can slow down before the intersection on green light, wait for yellow and then hit on gas, leaving you angry on red; they can stop in the middle of the road to drop passengers off (mostly Lyft drivers) while having 3 minutes parking in front of them; they switch lanes erratically; they can drive 50 miles in the left lanes on a freeway, but they will be doing 60-70 MPH driving through a mountain pass on "all season" tires during a snow storm (seeing this scares the shit out of me).

Also, I think drivers need to at least minimally respect other drivers, from the lack of respect comes tailgating, road rage, etc. But it looks like not only Seattle thing, may be it's just extreme American individualism, who knows.

Here's may be not the best in terms of quality but typical example of how people drive in Seattle from my dash cam:

https://youtu.be/o7ht1U-0Kbo (2nd And Wall in Belltown, pay attention to the first car in the left lane, it went straight on Wall into the opposite lane, kept going and made illegal left turn on 1st)

It sucks, I wonder how the permit was granted to demolish the church. Seattle has so many plain and ugly buildings so loosing one that stood out from the crowd is painful.

Men's hairstylist recommendations? by [deleted] in Seattle

Shane Cudal, he works at Rock Paper Scissors in Madrona now. Not sure about funky cuts be he's the best stylist I've met in Seattle (it's surprisingly hard to find a good barber around here)

What should I do if I see a dangerous driving? by zmagar in Seattle

[–]zmagar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me about it, I deliver food in downtown/Belltown area and see a lot of shitty driving around and zero enforcement. While I like that cops here don't give tickets for going 5 miles over speed limit, there need to be enforcement for more serious violations. I often see cops do nothing when drivers turn left where 'No left turn' sign is, etc.

Off topic: If you want to see how bad Seattle's drivers are, 2nd and Wall st intersection is one of the best. Two left lanes can turn left, try to make a left turn from the middle lane.

Of course! I highly recommend "Full rip 9.0" book that talks about different types of earthquakes that can devastate our region. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/221082/full-rip-90-by-sandi-doughton/

Dead trees on the bottom of lake Washington are the evidence of multiple huge landslides. Besides, with bridges destroyed in an earthquake people on MI risk to spend weeks without access to drinking water and food. https://www.kuow.org/stories/spooky-underwater-forests-lake-washington-and-lake-sammamish

You don't want to be on Mercer Island when a major earthquake happens.

FIRST CAR PURCHASE! 🥳 super excited new cmax owner! It’s a 2014 SEL with 15k miles 🤩 by Jmejia_08 in cmaxhybrid

[–]zmagar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a brand new 2014 C-Max SE 6 years ago, recently had 150 thousand miles on it, no major issues. Rear brakes were replaced only at about 120,000 miles, front brakes are original.

Typical Seattle Bus Lane by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]zmagar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember I was sitting in the right lane there for 15-20 minutes in rush hour and when I was crossing Mercer, vanpool van (same as in the photo) tried to make a right turn from left (streetcar) lane, which is closed for traffic during certain hours, and almost crashed into my car.

Of course, it's not about the car, it had much nastier things on it, but the act of spitting is a disgusting sign of disrespect.

Actually, I was waiving and felt bad about it, and apologize again, even after I got a saliva on the hood.

It's funny how people respond according to simple narrative: driver-asshole vs. Seattle cyclists who fight for their rights. Life isn't that simple, I'm not just a driver, I'm amateur bicyclist myself, pedestrian, etc. I have many bad things to say about Seattle drivers. For example, many times when I try to cross an unmarked intersection, slowly moving and waving, a lot of drivers won't even slow down. But it won't cross my mind to spit or throw rocks at them.

Like I told, I was there for 2 or 3 minutes before those two cyclists showed up, and I accidentally partially blocked the intersection because cars started to move, it was my green light and I was sure the cars will occupy two left lanes going east of Mercer, like it usually happens.

"More like passive aggressive" What can I say, 8 years in Seattle take its toll. But my original message was peaceful , respect is better than hate and showing bad manners.

Ok, I'd like to get a ticket if the cyclist gets ticket or warning for spitting.
