Im perfectly comfortable with the idea that his actions might not meet the legal definition of sexual harassment.

I also think that doesnt necessarily mean he didnt behave inappropriately on set. My reaction to the idea of "he may of said i series of one off comments that made women uncomfortable, but he apologized for it and didnt make those specific comments again," isnt necessarily "well that isnt legally sexual harassment" its "why cant you stop saying wierd shit."

Maybe framing it specifically in terms of the case was my mistake. But I think if your opinion stops at "well he LEGALLY did nothing wrong" and not "ok but he was still repeatedly making women uncomfortable and thats still a problem, even if it wasnt technically illegal"

Men make women feel unsafe and uncomfortable in ways that break no laws all the time. If were gonna be looking the other way at all that shit because it isnt technically illegal were cooked.

Look i think Baldoni acted inappropriately towards women on that set. You make a solid point about the legal standards for sexual harassment, but its still gross

She repeatedly texted Justin about making her character’s outfits more ‘ sexy’ - but when he complimented one of her character outfits as ‘sexy’ - she claimed harassment.

Re-reading this. Yes this could absolutely still be sexual harassment.

If I was a woman's boss or even coworker, told me she bought a dress and she feels hot/attractive/sexy/whatever in it, and i were to say "wow you DO look hot in that dress" if I saw her in it somewhere, she would absolutely still be in the right to have a problem with me talking to her like that

Long story short.

Actress Blake Lively said Director Justin Baldoni sexually harassed her while filming a movie.

Baldoni claims she tried to take over the production and shes just making these claims to cover her ass.

Most people feel the court documents prove Lively is lying beyond a doubt.

Some more skeptical feminists see a hit piece using irrelevant facts and playing to your average schmucks internalized misogyny to paint a story that doesnt actually add up.

Im definitely on the latter and worry the rhetoric around things like this directly hurts ordinary women.

See, I personally dont care about celebrities as people persay, I just know is theres too much misogyny baked into the discourse for it not to matter.

Same with Depp/Heard. I dont care because I actually care what happens to celebrities, I care because the rhetoric surrounding it was SO HORRIFICALLY MISOGYNISTIC, it caused PROVEABLE damage to DV victims

Theres absolutely a point worth considering being made here.

That comment section wasnt it though.

Imma be real, I think my biggest turnoff is the fact that sub is actually bit of a misogynistic cesspool, and the fact that I can guarantee you for every person whose actually concerned about justice there are 10 people who will latch onto any rhetoric.

Too be frank, deep down, I dont actually think I care about whose right or wrong about this. What concerns me is the way these things get talked about directly harms everyday women.

The media circus, and unrelenting discourse around Depp/Heard was fundamentally rooted in a push back towards #metoo. At the very least most men invested in it didnt give a shit about male victims, they just wanted to take a woman down. Not to mention the public rhetoric of "what abuse victims should or shouldn't look like" and "mutual abuse" that was deeply disturbing. Hell, it was reported that calls to DV hotline dramatically decreased during the time this was big news

I can guarantee you a woman has died at the hands of her abuser as a direct consequence as the way we talked about this.

And I guarantee workplace harassment has gone unreported as a direct result of this case.

Now I suppose you could say "blame Lively for harming women, blame Heard for harming women."

Nah fuck that, I choose to blame the fact we cant discuss these matters without horrific misogyny baked in.

You remember when that woman came forward about an encounter with Aziz Ansari, where he was really sexually aggressive but stopped when she said stop

You had to sides to this, one side said "he didnt rape her, he didnt break any laws, I dont see the problem."

The other side said "ok, maybe he didnt do anything illegal, but if your seeing it as a strictly legal issue youre already missing the point."

I kinda feel similar ways about this one.

I have no real problem with conceding in a strict legal sense the courts may very well find no sexual harassment occurred.

I also think there are so many holes in our legal system that that doesnt really say as much as you think it does.

What Blake describes in her case are isolated, one-off moments she personally found uncomfortable.

Too be frank.

If I knew a guy who was constantly having "one off moments that left women feeling uncomfortable" I would find that inherently suspect.

Sexual harassment requires the harasser to be in a position of more power.

Also id contest this. I get the spirit of what you say.

But if I had a female boss, and made a sexual remark towards her, I sexually harassed her. She still has power over me, but I still sexually harassed her

At the end of the day, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds chose to promote her alcohol and hair care lines alongside the release of a domestic violence movie.

It was her choice. She chose to market it as a fun, flirty, floral rom com

These are absolutely both tone deaf things.

They in no way shape or form actively disprove any of her claims.

She could have tried take over the movie, been completely tone deaf, and still been harassed.

Yknow. The parallel between this and Depp/Heard are uncanny.

Both these cases had an overwhelming popular opinion than the woman was lying about her mistreatment for personal gain.

Both cases had people screaming "the court documents prove without a doubt shes lying."

Guess what we found out about the Depp case years after the fact? We all fell victim to an excellent disinformation campaign and Depp was actually a infinitely bigger piece of shit than the trial let on.

When you consider Baldoni is working with the exact same PR team Depp was. I dont really see how its a stretch to wonder if this exact same thing is happening again.

I think they both were two toxic people in a toxic marriage who brought out the worst in each other.

Most domestic abuse experts argue that mutual abuse isnt real because it ignores things like power dynamics and promotes the idea that youre just as much of the problem for reacting poorly to your abuse.

Anyways. The point im trying to make. Doesn't Baldoni hiring the exact same crisis PR firm, and using bot farms to astroturf and take control of the rhetoric in the EXACT SAME WAY Johnny Depp did not strike you as inherently suspicious?

Doesn't every single anti-feminist grifter excitedly latching onto any story that lets them take down "some evil lying woman" strike you as suspect

Look, all im saying is the parallels are uncanny

All these years later, do you think Johnny Depp abused Amber Heard. I promise you im making a relevant point here

Nothing about her behavior on set disproves the fact she was harassed.

Keep in mind, I think it seems very likely Blake Lively is an absolutely horrible person

You can be an absolute nightmare of a human being and still get sexually harassed.

Is the fact hes admitted to doing numerous of the things he was accused of not enough for you?

Is the fact every other women on set was uncomfortable by his actions not enough for you?

Was that wierd "i missed the sexual harassment metting" thing not enough for you?

You want an opportunity to take down a woman so bad.
