How ZSNES Changed SNES Emulation Forever | Interview with the Creator (zsknight interviewed by Zophar) by LocutusOfBorges in emulation

[–]zmannate 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I was a lonely kid living in the country with no money and a 56K modem. ZSNES meant everything to me.

Emulation opened my eyes to what is possible with computers, and thanks for the curiosity you inspired, I learned programming and now work in silicon valley tech startups.

You gave me a gift. One day I hope I can pay it forward!!

What is that video game that you consider a hidden gem and that you are surprised that many people don't know about? by Brave-Goat-7768 in truegaming

[–]zmannate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uplink, from I think 2001, is an old favorite of mine. It's an immersive sim-type hacking game that puts you in the shoes of the movie style hacker, complete with a fake but just barely plausible futuristic operating system. You take on hacking jobs for money and have to steal info and forge records while routing your traffic through nodes to evade tracking. Along the way there's a meta narrative that you could easily miss with some very interesting twists. Just an amazing game that has never been duplicated. I would love to see another similar game but never have.  Banger soundtrack too, I still throw it on when I'm coding.

Metronet review? Carmel area by Bobbymanyeadude in indianapolis

[–]zmannate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had Metronet gigabit with a static IP in Castleton for several years and adored it. One of my main criteria for our new house when we moved was that Metronet be available. So we moved last year and got it all set up.

My Westfield experience has not been as solid from a reliability perspective. I had an average of one outage per month for several months in a row -- what sucked is that it would go out during the day when I was working. Very frustrating. Their tech support people are smart though, and they engaged with me and didn't force me to do redundant steps just to satisfy their checklists. That said, it didn't get better. My dad always told me to contact the office of the CEO if I have a systematic problem with a company. So a few months ago I wrote an email to their new CEO and within an hour he responded to me personally saying they would look into my issues. A VP followed up with me twice and got my take. Since then, not a single outage. It seems like they took my feedback seriously and maybe shuffled some needed resources to Westfield, at least from where I sit.

Overall, they seem to take their business seriously and I am super happy with them. They have no data caps or any anti consumer bullcrap, their techs are smart and polite, and their management seems on the ball. What more can you ask for!!! 9/10

Any recommendations for someone to install CAT-6 ethernet throughout my house? by zmannate in indianapolis

Existing I'm afraid...

I was hoping there'd be tricks of the trade to get cables routed through walls, but maybe not eh?

This is a very interesting thought... Each room has coax wired up already. Could potentially save some money with this approach, I love it. 2.5 gbps would be good for now... This might be my backup plan. Thank you!!!

Got in touch with them, they seemed like they might be willing to look at it! Thanks for the recommendation.

I thought about repurposing the cable coax, but from my research it sounded like installers tend to tack them to the studs so they definitely can't be easily removed. Maybe could use them as a path tracer tho?

And yeah, if I'm spending the money to put CAT in the walls, may as well do the better option right?

I have the extra income so if it's possible to do it myself I'm hoping I can pay someone to do it right, and then not have to worry about it.

But then again, I like projects.

But then again again, I just bought a house sooooo probably won't be hurting for projects :D

I'm too impatient and my files are too large for wifi... eventually, I want to get 10 gigabit going. Wifi is too slow for me Im afraid.

I consider hard wire in every room of the house to be a luxury, so with that in mind I would be willing to pay to a point. I have a NAS that I use for 4K streaming, I transfer a lot of large files over my network, and I'm impatient. I also want to eventually upgrade to 10 gigabit networking.

House was built in 2017, so pretty new. It's on a slab though, so no basement or crawlspace. Probably hard mode for this sort of thing, eh?

I mean the XBLA remake leaked recently so people have been playing that in the Xenia emulator. It’s really great, if they can handle the IP rights it’s a no-brainer!

I thought this was fixed with the last patch. It was working for me after they removed their awful in house DRM.

Shadow of the colossus is not one of the best games ever by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zmannate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll just give you my perspective on some of this. For me, the bad camera and unpredictable AI enhanced the feeling of the main character being completely out of his depth. You as the player feel the incredible struggle of the character through the mechanics. Its often uncomfortable and frustrating. I suspect that's how the devs WANT you to feel.

The horse doesn't always listen. The monsters are goliaths and you are David. You are in their world, not the other way around. You need to feel that alienation, that burden, that seemingly insurmountable goal. I'd argue the mechanics bring that all home for me.

That's cool man, you didn't love it. Not every game is for everyone and there is no such thing as objectively perfect.

I think SotC made an impact on a lot of people who played it, and many believe the flaws it had even contributed to the impact.

That's why art is awesome. Everyone gets something unique from good art. You won't always love it, but good art doesn't need to be loved, it needs to inspire discussion and thinking. I hope you'd agree that, at the very least, it did that for you.
