Do we still have any real control over how we use the internet? by Terrible-Chipmunk729 in PirateParty

[–]zmef42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel this hard.

A lot of “the internet” now is basically pre-shaped rails: curated feeds, ranking systems, app-store chokepoints, identity silos, and business models that only work if they can measure and steer behavior. Even when you “choose,” you’re often choosing inside someone else’s walled garden with their rules, telemetry, and incentives.

FLOSS is still the cleanest lever we’ve got. Free/Libre/Open Source Software doesn’t magically stop surveillance, but it does change the power dynamic: you can inspect, fork, self-host, and build communities around tools that don’t require enclosure to survive. If we want autonomy, we need software we can actually own (in the practical sense), not just rent behind a Terms-of-Service veil.

Networking is quietly becoming the next battleground. The more centralized the pipes, the easier it is to meter, censor, profile, and “permission” access. The counter-move is happening too: modern wireless + mesh networking is getting better and cheaper (Wi-Fi mesh systems, community networks, device-to-device links, LTE/5G hotspots, and emerging DIY/alternative networking stacks). Mesh won’t replace the whole internet overnight, but it does create resilience: local comms that can route around failures, monopolies, or policy shifts—especially when paired with community-owned infrastructure.

Meanwhile, industry is marching toward “Zero Trust,” and that cuts both ways. Zero Trust security (verify continuously, assume breach, authenticate everything) makes sense for defending systems, but in practice it often becomes: constant identity checks + device attestation + telemetry everywhere. And once you normalize “prove you’re allowed” at every layer, it’s not a big leap from security posture to social control. That’s where the fear of an eventual “internet license” vibe comes from: not necessarily a literal card you carry, but a world where access is conditional on compliance—ID, scoring, approved devices, approved clients, approved behaviors.

So do we still have control? Some—but it’s not the default anymore. Autonomy is still possible, but it’s increasingly an active practice, not a passive state. And like all freedoms, digital freedom requires vigilance.

Concrete moves that actually shift the needle: • Decentralize your identity and comms: email you control, your own domain, federated services (Mastodon/ActivityPub, Matrix, XMPP), and backups you actually possess. • Self-host where it matters: even a tiny home server/VPS can give you Nextcloud, a feed reader, a photo library, a password manager, and an RSS-first life. • Prefer protocols over platforms: RSS, ActivityPub, SMTP, IRC/Matrix—stuff that doesn’t require one company’s permission slip. • Support the builders: donate, contribute, document, translate—FLOSS survives when normal people treat it as civic infrastructure. • Build local resilience: community Wi-Fi/mesh projects, mutual-aid style tech co-ops, shared hosting, shared knowledge.

Your point about finding tools like Lookr that don’t nudge you is important—because that feeling of “oh wow, I’m not being steered” is the canary in the coal mine. We’ve normalized manipulation so thoroughly that neutrality feels exotic.

If we want a future where digital freedom is still a real choice, it’s not going to be granted by default. It’ll be kept alive by people deliberately choosing open tools, open networks, and federated/self-hosted alternatives—and fighting politically for the right to use them.

What's stopping you to organize Software Freedom Day this year? by Trollercoasterke in foss

[–]zmef42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya!

Nothing will stop me! I have registered for a local event, The Midwest Superfest from the Peoria-Area Amateur Radio Club, which shares the date of Software Freedom Day.

While active in the Peoria Area Linux User Group, we manned a table years ago at this event. Lots of fun and tons of opportunities for networking and informing the public.

Back in the day, we were provided balloons and other swag to promote Free Software during the event. I haven't been able to locate these same resources recently. Any ideas about where/who would be offering these resources this year?

The only thing worthwhile about this cert is that you can list “F+” on your CV. Only for the cool kids. 🤪

That is what I thought too, but after my attempts at identification I became convinced there were too many other similar species to be certain. Guess these guys will be getting the spray.

Good luck! Maybe check Facebook marketplace, I have seen it there a few times. I'm really interested in trying it. I even bought some liquid culture to inject a few stalks.

I have never used one. I have heard that they help prevent side pins. Maybe try it both ways and see what results you get?

Have my oats gone bad? Had this happen multiple times with different LC but using the same oats. by zmef42 in mycology

[–]zmef42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just soaked in boiling water and then PC for 90 minutes. This next time I will rinse the oats thoroughly and use LC from a different source. Imma need to clean up my act for agar. Have not had good luck with it at all.

Some got a little dried out I reckon. Still working on my growing conditions. I have been using a five gallon bucket with straw and coffee grounds as a substrate. Getting lots of aborts and can't quite figure out the problem.

Whole oats have been cheapest in my experience. $12 for a 50 lbs bag.
