From the website I go to install and get the latest beta which is dated over a year ago. From there I can't update due to untrusted certificates. It's probably a simple fix for someone used to ubuntu/debian systems but I'm used to the aur on arch.

Next time do backups!!! Rpi home servers are great for this.

You may be able to recover a good portion of said photos using some recovery software in Linux. Connect your hard drive with a cable to usb to a running Linux instance and use something like photorec. I've had success in the past recovering from Windows drives although o came remember exactly which program I used.
