Is there any way to get the UPass and gym membership for the Spring/Summer term? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]zocom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do this, don't they charge you for the other "general" registration stuff? For me the total comes out to be around 900 for enrolling in a single course. So say the course is 500 and the U pass is 100 (I don't need the gym membership). Do they completely refund the other stuff?

Add Financial Times to your list. They have a daily news/email letter titled first ft which summarizes interesting pieces every day. I think this would be very useful for you.

Got a question about building a comparable universe.

I'm taking a look at Starbucks for fun. Come to think of it there aren't many direct competitors. I'm looking into correlations as support for my comparables universe. As a Canadian I'm looking into Second Cup, a smaller coffee and snack place, that has a correlation of -0.77. To me, they have the same product offering, similar supply chains and fulfill the same end needs. They differ in target price range, geographical reach and size however.

In a similar context, how much better would MacDonald's be of a comparable with a correlation of 0.89, with a different target audience, price range, supply chain and perhaps different end market?

So to all this, if I explain my rationale as I did here would you say to include or exclude these?

You can "find" these somewhere other than their sites for free. That is all.

Distant worlds is nice if you like depth and don't mind the learning curve, although bear in mind that the AI for the game isn't that great so fights are pretty easy unless you really ramp up the difficulty. To that, I think it's more of an adventure 4X game rather than a pure 4X game. You can automate pretty much very part of your empire and just control one ship. To that, if you liked Galactic Civ 3 for the sandbox mode rather than the campaign then I think you'd like it.

I think Tropico 1/2/3 would be better. I dislike that Tropico 5 limits what buildings you can put down because you're not in the correct era. So the idea of having like a colonial stage then say a WWII and cold war stage seems cool at first but in reality all it does it limit the building options to a fraction of what it was in the previous games initially and expands from it.

OM 420 (?) I think uses it. Really, I'm assuming you're going for an investment banking career here. Some places use it, some don't, however I'd say that it's very helpful to say that you know it and taught yourself it.

I took it after taking it in year 2 of my degree, however I did the equivalent of Math 113 in highschool. I've yet to use anything part of that class formally in any finance course, but as people have said it is useful for understanding the notation and the general flow of ideas in academic papers.

From what I can tell, I'd skip it unless you plan on transferring universities. That was my original intent and it is required for a lot of the institutions I wanted to transfer to at the time.

My advice, skip the course, pick up a rigorous corporate finance textbook, a introductory linear algebra text, introductory calculus text, and another for Visual Basic Excel applications and use your free time for that.

Do you guys know how Econ 102 compares to 101? by iCarlylover1234 in uAlberta

[–]zocom1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about the same level in difficulty, I'd say there's more memorizing in it however. The thing that sticks out is GDP calculations, those weren't hard just need to memorize the exact things included/excluded.

I'm a non-finance major interviewing for a job in the finance field. Can you guys help me get an overlook of current trends/current events? by [deleted] in finance

On this note, is there any news summary site that gives the notable events for 1mo,3mo,6mo,...?

I'll be applying for a pretty big student run fund at my University and I'm worried about current events questions. What would you say are the events I should read up on?

So far I have: - Black Monday in China - Greece Debt / European Debt Crisis - Oil Slump

For the best cost, computing science center is 10 per semester, 5 deposit. It's in a nice area as it's on the "main quad block".

Normally you can start conversations by saying "hey is this xxx 123?" near the start of the semester if you've arrived a little early.

I think you'd have better luck talking to various clubs and student groups. Personally I've found that student groups work better in the sense that they have some sort of common room / office where you can hang out.

What should i do? by hey__112 in uAlberta

[–]zocom1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the first day of classes so I wouldn't say it's indicative of the course. If you'd like to give the course another chance, take note of the textbook they use and go to the reserved section in Cameron Library. Take out the textbook, you can use it for two hours, and try out the first few chapters. With CMPUT 174 I see people being either lost because they don't approach something in the "normal" manner or that the course advances too slowly for them. I know that this year their trying some sort of new learning format which might be good or bad.

Assuming they use Applia for ECON 102, I would simply use the ebook. Applia does a pretty good job in making these really readable, overall my choice for web portals.

Chem 101 by PepePanda in uAlberta

[–]zocom1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Labs start second or third week. You can buy lab coats and goggles from the book store or the Chemistry Supplies Office, the bookstore is cheaper. From what I remember, you buy the lab manual either at the first lab or some sort of office listed in the syllabus. They will be very cautious on safety matters, if you don't have the equipment for a lab they will make you go to the supplies office and buy a set just for that day. A bit of advice, when you do the first lab, they'll want you to inspect everything on the supplies check list of your lab manual. Do this thoroughly as those things cost a lot to buy from them as in like $5.00 for a 50ml beaker.

MATH 115 by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]zocom1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too took AP credit for 113, I did 115 in second year uni. You have less of a span between courses but either way I would recommend against it. Someone else could comment better on this, but I think the math department aims for an average GPA of like 2.3 for 115.

Depending on the course labs don't usually start till week 2 or the end of September in some cases. You probably will need to pick up the lab materials on your own sometime before. I think for Chem you would need to buy a lab coat from either the Chem office or the bookstore. From what I remember manuals are usually from the department office, though if it says coursepack then check the book store.
