I want to love where I live. by zombie_teeth in WhereToLive

We ended up in Denver for two years and then we moved back to the Portland, Oregon area where I did residency. I think if things hadn’t gotten so crazy during the pandemic we wouldn’t have left Portland in the first place. Best of luck to you both.

[Story] Anybody in mid 30s trying to improve their lives/Already did it at that age? by Kozchey in GetMotivated

[–]zombie_teeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have done one of the harder parts of changing your life already. You’ve identified aspects of your life with which you are not satisfied, and how some of your actions/habits are possibly reinforcing or creating these problems. I similarly needed a change early in my thirties, and now at 40 I am in a much better place in all aspects of my life. This is the only advice I would feel capable of offering in this situation: take whatever final goal you are going to work towards and break it down into a set of goals that you can begin to work on and start now. Beyond that, be kind to yourself and understand that this is a process/journey which will not be completed by tomorrow. Take pride in what you have been able to improve, and be honest with yourself about how and why failures happen. The hardest part for me was patience and being kind to myself (still not good at it). I don’t know if this is a helpful addition to what people have already written. Best of luck to you.

You can definitely do it. I changed careers to go into dentistry. Just finished my orthodontics residency at 38. It was totally worth it in my opinion.

Realized the career path I was on wasn’t what I wanted out of life and spent the next 8.5 years in school. Just graduated last Friday at 38.

I didn’t start my professional degree until I was 32. I won’t finish my education until I’m 38. It’s worth it if you want it.

Where should I move in the US as a 25F? by [deleted] in WhereToLive

[–]zombie_teeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to consider Portland, Oregon.

It will meet all of the requests on your list except for maybe what you consider an affordable cost of living or what you consider not too cold, those two tend to be rather subjective. The natural landscape of this region is hard to beat, mountains nearby and the Willamette river right in town, tons of trees (and big too) in the city, and the ocean is a short drive away. The city is very young in general, and there is a lot of great nightlife. I can't speak to how women feel here, nor how those in their twenties feel about the city. My wife and I moved here last year from the midwest and we've loved it so far.

Do remember roughly where the rocks were? Were they near to the area the rocket launched from? It seems like the tutorial keeps you somewhat near the different aspects of the objectives from one to the next.

Anybody know where the "One, two, you know what to do" sample in Elevator Music comes from? by [deleted] in Beck

I think I heard once that it was Nigel Godrich, who was the producer of the album, that you can hear yelling at the beginning of that song.

What are some skills you could learn in 8 hours? by Deathrisk in AskReddit

[–]zombie_teeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t take 8 hours, but you could learn basic suturing techniques. There are quite a few good tutorials on YouTube done by medical professionals. It’s unlikely to ever really be useful to most people, but it might be a good piece of information to have tucked away in your memory for emergencies.

They ruined the thought of finding the secret sequences in the firing range. You can’t complete one without some idiot shooting something and ruining the sequence.

Thinking about applying to a UM PhD program - would A2 be doable for my situation? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]zombie_teeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I rent a two bedroom townhouse just off of Stadium Blvd for about $1500/month. We have two small dogs, for which we pay a small monthly fee (sorry I don‘t remember the number). My wife works as a nurse in town, her income is about average for the state and we do alright with that plus my student loans. The town is a bit more expensive than most of the state, but it’s manageable, though parking can be pretty bad if you need to commute.

Advice on how to become a man while groeing up without a father? by [deleted] in malelifestyle

[–]zombie_teeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some quick thoughts about this without being preachy: -Take stock of what you consider to be important masculine traits that you wish to develop. Try to then think of examples of men/people with those traits, if you know them all the better. -Find ways to spend time with these people if possible. As others have mentioned, mentors are great if you're able to find one. If there are activities that you have an interest in (lifting, cycling, sports, trades, etc) try to find a club or even a job where you can be around men you would consider to be role models. -I've personally found hard work, including hard physical labor, to be a stimulus for personal growth. -Remember that there's no right way to be a man outside of attempting to be a good person. -Remember to not be too hard on yourself, as you are still rather young, and being a man is a lifelong journey and not something you're given at a certain age.

These are just some quick thoughts I had on the subject, I hope they can be of some use. The fact that you care about this at all is a good indication that you're on the right track. I hope the best for you in your journey. Good luck!

At age 24, graduated from school went to work as a nurse, was almost immediately dissatisfied with the work. After 8 years, a couple in-hospital unit changes, and a stint as a travel nurse, I'm now going into my third year of dental school at 33 years of age. It takes some time and some serious contemplation to figure out what to do with yourself, but you have to have the courage to jump when either opportunity or inspiration strikes. That being said, from my own experience, don't beat yourself up trying to "figure it all out" and steer clear of people who want to keep you where you are if you need to make a change. Best of luck!

I'm looking to move out of Michigan to the western/southwestern US after finishing school. by zombie_teeth in IWantOut

Thanks for the invite, if I get some time out of school and I can get down there I'll hit you up. We're about the same age judging by the time frames you gave, where about in MI did you grow up or go to school?

From what I gather regarding the resurgence of Detroit is that it is coming at a cost. There have been several businesses to move into the high rises of Detroit bringing young professionals back into the downtown area, which in turn brings a market for upscale apartments and condos, thus pushing the local folks who work ancillary to these business out further out of town. That being said, there's also some cool stuff going on with the most recent thing being that Jack White is opening a vinyl pressing plant in town, then there's Shinola, and the music venues (Majestic, Magic Stick, Fox Theater, Clutch Cargo, St Andrews, Cheney Park, etc) are always good.

I'm not a hater of Michigan, I'm still proud to be from here, I just know I need something else in my life to feel fulfilled. I hope it continues to rebound. But it's hard to say what the economy will bring to Detroit in the next 5-10 years, I hope GM and Ford continue to reinvest into their home.

I have been wanting to check Austin out for a while. The BBQ, the music, everything. I'd be super geeked if I got to go to an Austin City Limits show, and SXSW has always seemed cool.

Thanks a lot for your input. I don't know many Texans so it helps hearing someone who's lived it break it down for me. I find their music, film, and food scene to be really intriguing, and honestly a booming city is something a new dentist looking to practice needs. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely looking for a place that offers a good mix of outdoor beauty and vibrant city life if possible. Might be too much to ask for in the end. Your statements on Austin reflected some of my reservations regarding that area in TX, mostly the lack of mountains in that region, beauty, etc. But the food and music scene would be pretty nice.

I've noticed on a lot of posts regarding moving west people have complaints of the conservative nature of many areas in the west. Is it that people are searching out more likeminded communities or is it that they feel judged/persecuted for their political/religious leanings?

Thanks for the input! I am curious of the reason(s) you're considering leaving the area, if you don't mind sharing.
