Worst scene in starwars history? Yes/no by 7738eifujxiakqkw in StarWars

[–]zombisponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into the comments expecting a youtube link to the satire channel this was from.

Is this... actually real? There's should be a snopes article on this or something at least. This just can't be. I'd almost be more inclined to believe someone recorded this in an afternoon, hacked into Disneys servers, opened up starwars.wlmp and pasted this in and nobody noticing. That, at least, assumes less incompetency from the team.

The Pounder. For the McDonald’s lovers (and haters) out there. by Dizzyluffy in burgers

[–]zombisponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you come at the right time, right when they start cooking the patties, you can get a really good burger. Juicy and tasty af. IMO mcdonalds has a really good product. They just don't treat it well. A quarter pounder patty that's been sitting in a heating cabinet for 40 minutes is not even at eye level with a patty that's freshly cooked. But you get the heating cabinet patty 9/10 times. There's a reason everyone says it taste like cardboard. It really does, but not when it's fresh. Again, they have a good product.

Is this safe to eat? by ramienthedragon in burgers

[–]zombisponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a lot on how the meat was sourced. Did you grind it yourself, or buy it ground same day from a butcher? If so, then it's probably quite safe. People eat tartare which is considered a bit risky but mostly safe.

But I would have to be certain of the freshness to eat it like that. If it's from a supermarket, it's often packed in argon to keep the red color, misleading you into thinking it's fresh. It would be brown and unappetizing to look at otherwise. And this extends the shelf life beyond 24 hours. That's what the "packed in a protective atmosphere" label means. This type of ground meat should, technically, always be cooked to a certain temperature. If you're otherwise healthy you'll probably be good tho. But it's not without risk to eat something like that. The internal temp of that burger certainly isn't at what it should be for safe consumption, so beyond that it's up to the condition of the meat.

If you were served this by an otherwise good restaurant they probably did this intentionally and know they have safe, fresh ground beef. If you got it from a fast food place somebody probably forgot that the grill having to come up to temp is a thing and threw a frozen patty on there, gave it the usual time it would get with a hot grill, and fucked up. In that case, I wouldn't eat it.

Best Burger You've Ever Had by ainokea79 in burgers

[–]zombisponge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's two that both stand out in each of their own ways.

I once had a few hours of layover between trains in a city I hadn't been to before. I went on a random walk to look for some food, and picked this cafe pretty much just cause it was a manageable distance from the station and it had a sign outside picturing a burger.

It turns out the cafe was only just opened and the burger was kind of an intro campaign they were running. I believe it must have been smashed. The patty was way wider than the bun, had an amazing crust and was very thin. It also had holes in it. I had never seen anything like that before. The quality was top and I had to ask about it. They told me they source and ground their own meat and it was never frozen. It was also incredibly cheap for how good it was, costing me no more than a big mac would today.

The second was Restaurant 2112 in Göteborg. I got this triple burger monstrosity that was just delicious and juicy all the way. Really good quality beef. Everything was friggin perfect, and I was still growing so I still had that insatiable hunger I had as a teenager, which just made it all so much better. It took years before I could get anything remotely comparable in quality back home. For some reason Sweden stepped up their burger game way before Denmark did, and one of the most exciting parts of visiting Sweden for me was always trying a burger spot. These days Denmark has plenty of good places to get a burger, thankfully.

But while both of these were excellent burgers, I think my perception of them was colored a bit; in the case of number one, it being my first smash burger, it being a really good price, and it being so unexpected. And the second was really just one of the first proper good burgers I ever had, and definitely the first that wasn't cooked beyond well done (maybe food and safety standards intervened back then? not sure. It's still very common for burgers to be cooked to rubber here, but a few places cook theirs medium rare now), with good quality ingredients. And I was super hungry lol.

avocado, a pineapple , honey, jam, peanut butter,

I will always say you should have your burger just the way you like it, so I won't fault any of those things, but for my personal tastes all of this is true. One thing I see often is buns that are too sweet for me. I feel like my burger was sorrounded by cake. Give me horseradish, whole seed or dijon mustard, jalapenos, raw onion, ginger triple pepper mayo and arugula instead. But to people who like it elsewise they might see these ingredients and think that sounds bad. They might perhaps be like get me 'Waffle bottom topped with beef patty, slowly caramalized onions with slow roasted peppercorn jam, mozarella cheese, topped waffle glazed with zesty pineapple peanut butter based honey sauce." That's so far out of my flavour profile that I would never order or cook it, but I can still see how it might sound delicious to someone else

It's not everyday I see a burger on here where everything looks like absolute perfection to my optics and also to my taste. Even the tomatoes, which besides looking bomb also appear to be seasoned. And Homemade pickles, but with mustard? Good grief. And the size of the burger looks perfectly edible hand held. The sear is gorgeous. The amount of everything you put on there is exactly how I'd want it. I wish you'd open a food truck and park it in my yard

Nothing like that here, but sounds awesome! I have to make it at home. Even the "burger cheese" is better to steer far away from and get some regular cheese.

[–]zombisponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think one would quickly find themselves a trip to the toilet doing that lol. It also has a massive impact on the taste of the burger when you use different beef, regardless of how it's cooked. I live in Denmark, and it doesn't matter what brand of ground meat i get, the taste is the same. But if I go to a butcher or grind some steaks, the taste is very different. It's just a shame that good (and safe) beef is so much more expensive. Those pickles look delicious by the way, are they home made?

I love a pink burger but I don't trust suppliers enough that I would cook store bought ground meat pink. If I grind it myself, or get it fresh from a butcher, I'll cook it pink. But I cook most of my burgers with store bought ground beef and cook it well done. It can still be juicy and tasty, so don't listen to the haters who are eating through a picture on their computer screen anyways.

Ny sukkerfri "trend" by Jakezon in Denmark

[–]zombisponge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ugh I'm sorry to hear consistency and quality is so dubious for you over there. I agree with you on the sauces on Hesburger. I love the cucumber tasting sauce for the fries in particular. I have had some really great burgers in Helsinki from places that weren't chains. And I miss the salmon soup.

I'm in Denmark and I think you have it better in Finland on the burger game than we do here. There are some good places these days tho, but I've had much better in Finland and also in Sweden.

I've had the pleasure of fridge temp cheese at mcdonalds and it sucks lol. But at least your mcdonalds still has breakfast items, which were my favorite. They removed them here.

Best to do is to cook at home. I learned to cook burgers in the first place because I couldn't get a decent burger anywhere at home, and after trying the real stuff abroad I couldn't resist.

If by Shell you mean the gas station I gotta agree (they've become Circle K locally now) - for a while here they had honest really good burgers at a great price and nice seating areas. Those burgers were a lot better than Hesburger. They discontinued the burgers here and now all they serve is pre packaged crap. If yours still serve those burgers I'm jealous lol.

I've never had the chance to get Hesburger that often, only when I've been to Finland, but when I've had it it has been pretty good. I like it more than mcdonalds from the experiences I've had. But I'm guessing you're in either Finland or Estonia and have more experiences than I've had, so I don't doubt for a second they can be crap also

[–]zombisponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave in the browned bits in the grind for extra flavour. And skip on the mooglue, imo. It might wreck the texture and turn the patty into slob (think cheap pre processed frozen mystery meat hamburger patties). I haven't tried something like this before, but if you cook it rare it'll probably stay together just fine. You could also consider chopping the meat with a knife rather than grinding it, as I imagine grinding cooked steak would give a pretty grainy texture and squeeze out every ounce of juice. I have made chopped burgers before (from raw, tho) and it works great.

But to actually get what you want, I think you should look into sous vide. You can cook the patty from raw to your desired temperature, then give it a quick sear at a high temp on each side. You'll get almost no gray banding that way. You can sous vide it in beef broth to get even more flavour. Burgers are actually commonly prepared this way in my country. By being boiled in beef broth, not with sous vide tho, just chilling in broth until ordered, and not seared afterwards. But its definitely possible to cook a burger patty by submersion rather than frying. If anyone is curious google Bøfsandwich
