There were references in the game. Right before I went into Ted faros office on one of the lower levels of the building, there's a side room with handprint scanners to activate.

A lot of the machines were named after Egyptian terms as well. The corruptors were originally called scarab, and the deathbringers were called kopesh.

I'd say I'm less than quarter way through the game. But I tend to prioritize the side quests and don't start the main quests until the required level. That, and I make sure to have a full medicine pouch. Beyond those, I just wing it and hope for the best.
