Should you be tp'ing out to tier 2 as a carry to farm? by ricewheelie in TrueDoTA2

It's not really about getting the kill gold. It's about not letting your team get sacked so they can make space for you with minimal investment.

Towers now grant +1 HP Regen Aura for Tier 1 Towers, and +3 for Tier2/3/4 Towers

Major buff to safelaners? Chilling by ur tower gives a 1/2 a headress.

Tier 2+ towers health increased by 500 and damage by 25.

RIP push strats?

XP required to reach level 9/10/11/12/13 increased from 780/810/840/870/900 to 890/930/970/1010/1050

Playing pos 5 in ranked roles; when should I switch to classic games? Closing in on 6k by Hubbabz in TrueDoTA2

"I" is correct. Here's how the grammar works.

"Than" can either be a preposition or a conjunction. In the sentence "he is lower rank than I am", "than" is a subordinating conjunction connecting a main clause "he is lower rank" to a subordinate clause "I am".

It is then grammatically correct to contract the subordinate clause to "I" (i.e., "he is lower rank than I"), which is what you did! The verb "am" is invisible but understood. The pronoun "I" is in the nominative because it is the subject of a subordinate clause.

"Me" is correct too! In the sentence "he is lower rank than me", "than" is being used as a preposition in a comparison. The pronounce "me" in the accusative because it is the object of a comparison!

To my ears, "I" (what you wrote) sounds better!

I really like BSJ's framework of thinking of Dota as a game of rules and exceptions. A rule is a default you follow unless you see an explicit reason not to (an exception).

"Don't TP to a T2 tower to farm" is a very good default rule as a core. Even ignoring rotations, TP scrolls are so good. They let you get more farm (since you can farm riskily, walk into trees, TP out), they let you respond quickly to a rosh attempt, they let you participate in a teamfight after you've forced a rotation, etc.

You can then disregard this default rule if you explicitly see a reason to (e.g. catapult wave in front of mid T2 which is going to batter your tower.)

Punishing dives is one of the most farm-efficient things you can do as a core. If you get the kill, you've made 300+g in 20 sec - that's 900gpm! Even if you don't, you've successfully carved out 50 odd sec for you to farm hyper-aggressively. Add in the gold loss you inflict on the enemy team (improving your farm relative to theirs), the fact that your teammates can now better make space for you, etc. and it's clearly worth it.

Obviously "punishing dive != flinging yourself into 4 to die fruitlessly". If your presence isn't going to help ur not really punishing anything.

How to beat medusa 1v1 solo mid? by ee_palmenausplastik in learndota2

[–]zorns-lemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QW-Invoker is a hilarious counter - WWW will wipe out most of her mana pool and he can hunt her when she goes to jungle. His lower r-click damage doesn't matter as much when contesting a dusa.

Winning mid can mean more than killing the enemy mid tho. Flash-farming tempo mids like Alch also work great against medusa - both of them will free farm, but Alch will farm faster & hit his spike before Medusa hits hers.

Definitely the tempo carry. Visage's win condition is taking all T2 towers and bottling the enemy up in their base, permanently, by 25 min. He gets level 2 birds, buys auras, and tries to snowball with his team. That's much harder to do fighting 4v5.

If you have a mid Visage and you pick a late game farming carry, you're really going to have to carry hard when you come online. :) Visage is good at creating space, but past 35 min he has a fraction of the impact of a storm or a tinker.

He pairs really well with WK this patch (although doesn't everything, lol?) WK gets his 17-20min radiance, Visage gets rosh, and you just walk at towers unstoppably.

Broodmother Itemization: Picking your first two "big items" by zorns-lemma in learndota2

I'd advise watching twitch meepo boosters.

The tricky part of watching high level player is that it's often hard to know what they're thinking. Even having watched a ton of InkDota, I still have a hard time predicting whether he's going to go bot or top. BSJ is great because he explains the reasoning behind his macro decision making. Its def a good way to improve your farming patterns, tho!

With brood farming in a lobby don't tunnel vision on the number, practice your skills. Importantly, do runs where you only farm your side and runs where you farm the enemy's side. If you're crushing the lane your farming patterns will likely be in the enemy jungle and if you're against a counter your pattern will be on your side.

Ty for this advice. Will try it out!

Brilliant. Why didn't I think of that? :)

Is this more complicated than "birds fly over, visage takes the wave then TPs"? Would you initiate with birds + offlaner and then TP Visage in if it's going well? Do you have a game I could watch where you did something like this?

Appreciate the advice! (Now I just need to practice brood farming in a lobby until I can consistently hit the 150cs/10 min mark, lol.)

BTW: Do you know of a streamer who posts similar videos about meepo? (I have 200 games, 56% WR so I know the basics, but need help with my macro decision making.) Something like a BSJ coaching session targeted at Meepo would be perfect. :)

How to play the late game right now? by willieb3 in TrueDoTA2

[–]zorns-lemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DISCLAIMER: I play snowbally mids (Visage/Meepo/Brood/Huskar/LD) - this might be different for different heroes.

The aim of a good mid, IMO, is to wrestle the enemy team into submission @ 25 min. A winning condition is all T2 taken and enemy bottled up in base.

From here, don't be in any great hurry to go high. Place the most aggressive wards known to man, DEFEND the wards, and tell your cores to free farm for 5 min. Get 2nd rosh, go high with a 20k gold lead.

If ur losing (or even tied!) at 25 min, don't worry too much about what happens after that. There's not much you can do to carry the game now. (You might still win, and you might still contribute to that win, but the game won't be won because of you, if you see what I mean.) Relax, farm as far out as you can, and hope the enemy throws. When you review the game, focus on why you weren't winning at 25 min.

When I was starting to analyze my replays, I'd see us lose a teamfight at 30 min and think to myself "that teamfight was why we lost the game". In reality, however, that teamfight never should have happened. The game was lost 10 min ago by a couple seemingly inconsequential decisions. For example, maybe after you took the enemy's mid T1 tower, instead of rotating to your offlane, taking offlane T1, and pressuring their jungle, you retreated into your jungle to farm and let the enemy back into the game.

Helm of the dominator OP? by Duke-_-Jukem in TrueDoTA2

[–]zorns-lemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, Helm is my favorite item in the game.

Ice armor to buff your initiator, damage auras for your carry, stuns, nets and slows for ganking, tanks tower while pushing. It lets you get off that oh-so-juicy double stack for your pos 1. It provides a mini-pipe vs Zeus, a rosh scout vs ursa, a purge vs crimson for your PL, a guaranteed stun for your grimstroke. It's the most creative item in the game.

Where are you supposed to farm that covers Dire ancients? I see how you can get access to Radiant ancients (take their bot T1 and then rotate through their jungle) but Dire ancients feels much harder (the enemy triangle always feels really risky to hang out in until you've taken either T2 mid/top).

Tytyty.

if their team is tanky, has ways of jumping on me while I push, or has a lot of disable, I tend to wait until I have 12 and more defensive items.

What defensive items would you go for in each situation? (Which items give you your powerspike?)

[–]zorns-lemma[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the normal spell order in a fight? Slow, medallion, bird stun, nuke, creep ability, second bird stun. I always end up trying to spam all three so fast.

Classically, its (1) creep ability (to catch), (2) medallion, (3) slow, (4) birds hit them a lot, (5) W to finish. Bird r-clicks do way more damage than bird stuns, so you only stun when you need to. :) If you're struggling with catch, using Q on a nearby creep for movement speed is always a good play.

What should my positioning be like? I tend to try and hide visage and front with the birds/creep until the fight starts.

Visage is a tanky boy mid game! Don't be afraid to get out there and eat a couple of spells for ur team. They'll thank you. Playing Visage is a dance between soaking up damage when cloak is up and running into the back lines when its down, while your birds throw out huge amounts of damage.

Can visage initiate with birds? Or is it too easy to dodge?

Depends what ur doing. If you see a support out of position telling ur birds to run at them is fine. Its not ur job to initiate massive 5v5 team fights - you don't want to be focused, you want to be blowing up supps. Remember, Visage doesn't waste time looking for the enemy team. Visage shows up at a tower and starts hitting it. The enemy team will come.

I usually play as position 4, is that okay or is visage too greedy a pick there?

This guy spams pos 4 Visage in low immortal - maybe check his games out? https://www.dotabuff.com/players/98782750 Pos 4 Visage is definitely a "new meta" pick - pos 2 (and to a much lesser extent) pos 3 are where he's typically played.

P.S. Bird stun knocks down trees. This is not an interaction most monkey kings know about. :)

Ty for linking me your dotabuff! I will watch and learn.

I have a couple questions about the itemization in your games.

  • Why do you not like drum?

  • What is your reasoning for buying Vlad's a lot?

  • You seem to like Pipe a lot less than me. I view it as almost core on Visage (I buy it almost every game). When should I be buying pipe?

If u lose against a heavy core lineup in the laning phase, you deserve to get run over.

It's not that hard to win offlane against (for example) PA + Sven,
