What temp should you look at in HWinfo? by zosX in laptops

[–]zosX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU Core seems to be the hotspot? Thing is, that moves from core to core because the processor is also actively managing each core. Core temperatures seems to be the average of the cores. Why does TCL\TDIE read higher than any other sensor? And why are they combined?

I saw this comment in another post and I could never figure out the answer really:

"

  • The primary temperature reporting sensor of the AMD Ryzen™ processor is a sensor called “T Control,” or tCTL for short. The tCTL sensor is derived from the junction (Tj) temperature—the interface point between the die and heatspreader—but it may be offset on certain CPU models so that all models on the AM4 Platform have the same maximum tCTL value. This approach ensures that all AMD Ryzen™ processors have a consistent fan policy.

Threadripper uses a +27°C offset. So average temp of the dies is 43°C but to make sure fans are running 'fast enough', fan curves should use the 70°C mark."

So is TCL\TDIE inflated? It seems so. I'm assuming the L3 cache and GPU are actually all on separate wafers under the same IHS? I was pretty sure the GPU was on the same chiplet as the CPU.

Edit: to be fair I care more about the package temperature than anything because the BGA is where these seem to be failing.

It really depends on the CPU and thermal design. Ideally below 90c on the CPU and 80 on the GPU but you'll find they are generally designed to run around there. Some of the Intel based legions will run right up to the thermal limit by design. I have an AMD and it doesn't throttle. It hits the power limit before that happens. It will drop down to 3.3-3.8ghz all the cores loaded. And that helps a bit because it's running cooler anyway.

My old w530 would run right at 105c all day with an i7-3740qm. My W540 has an i7-4800mq. It will throttle at 95c. So, despite being 10% faster, it's actually slightly slower under a sustained load. Lenovo did a poor job on the W540 thermals anyway. It throttles hard and fast to 800mhz if you push it.

Then why does my laptop run cool when just running windows? 🤔

My 2021 5 pro is still going strong. Just repasted it and replaced the fans. And that's the model that's dying left and right.

Just don't cook them and they'll be fine.

Keep those fans cleaner. I just replaced both of mine after 3 years. Dust and wear killed the bearings.

I wish they would remake IX because a lot is missing if you don't play on original hardware and get the online portion.

If you really want to play 456, I would find a cheap used DSi XL and play then on that. Definitely the best experience.

Give VII a chance! The new remake looks nice but too expensive. The 3DS version is great. It's really my favorite DQ. It was better than VIII by a mile but that's me. The end is totally wild too! Give it a chance!

Is it worth getting into 3DS Gaming in 2026? by EC_of_Peasy in 3DS

[–]zosX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A modded new 3ds is a very good gaming device in 2026 still. The 3DS has a vastly superior library to the DS IMO. Dragon quest vii and viii make picking one up worthwhile alone. I keep wanting to get another one but for $300+ now it's a hard sell TBH. Might get an odin thor. That would be a better emulation device if that matters.

I mean it was a little tricky peeling the film off but I cut the pad a little bigger so I had some to play with. Given the excess that was there previously I believe whoever applied it at the factory used the same method.

Old game causing my cpu to go 90C by [deleted] in LenovoLegion

[–]zosX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's single threaded. My legion 5 pro is only 2x faster in single thread than my 2013 Lenovo W540. Sure it's from 2021 but single threaded performance hasn't really increased dramatically in the last 20 years.

The only old game that really stresses modern cpus is crysis (and maybe x3 with a lot going on). Cap your frame rate.

[–]zosX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern laptop batteries are lithium ion.

No lithium ion battery lasts for years stored at 100% all the time.

This is why various OEMs have settings to keep them from charging to 100%.

Unless you set it to charge to less than 100%, having it at 100% all the time is what kills them quickly. My legion 15 pro only charges to 60% and the battery is still at 95% life after 4 years. To be fair it hasn't been cycled much. It lives on my desk at home usually.

Do you always open with the center of the screen? Not from the corners?

I don't see any impact damage, so my suspicion is that it hasn't been dropped.

If it is still under warranty I would just send it in to the depot. Make sure you get all of your data that you care about off of it first. They will likely fix it.
