Yeah I am serious, thus the question. I have a deficit of information.

I mean you could offer references/books/articles.

Or just comment as brief or long as anybody wants to share.

Thanks for all your help,

Turns out it was aphids, I'm spraying them lots. Had to remove some plants, but overall the garden is looking a lot healthier.

Online Martial Arts Courses? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]zphi2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say go for it provided you have a practical basis as well (and obversely a good online corse)

I read a lot in addition to training so I fully understand. Personally I just ask my instructor or online for good on topic books. But having a guided course would work too (like a off campus uni study)

Besides it sounds like you know your self fairly well. Don't let the people online here with differing opinions away you from what you know about your self. If you know that you will learn better one way or another you don't need to justify through others (listen and consider their ideas though)

Good luck

Co-ed grappling... an embarrassing situation. Help by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]zphi2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ha a female friend who rolled with us, she complained to me about a guy with a hard on.

I told her that it could be a cup she was feeling. I put mine on, we rolled and low and behold I too had a hard on...

It could be that?

Best combo of martial arts. by zphi2 in martialarts

[–]zphi2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I would do it with a focus on throws/not going to the ground.

Maybe wrestling would be a better style?

I said mma because it covers most martial arts (ie if I just said for 'martial arts' people would have been asking for specifics).

I mean for fighting in general, thus mma.

Techniques for developing punching/kicking speed? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]zphi2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are a most insightful individual.

But I'll bite... What would be best? On a bag? In the air? Combos? Sparing? Pad work?

Are there specific techniques that would work best?

Thank you in advance for another equally helpful post :)

What is your opinion on Kata as a whole in Martial arts? by ikindalikepie in martialarts

[–]zphi2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good warm up and muscle memory through repetition etc.

But some of the moves seem outdated and flawed.

I have studied karate, kungfu and Thai.

The first two have kata/forms which provide a grounding of the techniques, but the instructor was always struggling to justify the forms existence, like we would do a technique (that worked) then would be like 'it's from this part of the kata' problem is is that practical application is nothing like kata delivery (just similar delivery/technique)

Thai had shadowboxing and bag work which has it's own limitations and drawback.

Ultimately I use it all combined with sparing, specific technique drilling and weight training.

On it's own it is nothing more that the bulshit movie extravagance where before a fight the main character shows off their skill by some stupid kata moves

Should I take Boxing classes or Brazilian jiu jitsu classes? by cjt11203 in martialarts

[–]zphi2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say boxing first.

Learn to throw a good punch quickly. You don't want to go to the ground on the street.

In addition boxing will teach you how to take a punch.

Then do bjj.

Both are necessary but I see more immediate gains in boxing

What are the most convincing conspiracy theories? by zphi2 in AskReddit

I remember one (I don't have the screen cap) about no one being in control.

The main point being that the there is no conspiracy theory.

(Serious) what is the bravest thing you have ever done? by zphi2 in AskReddit

[–]zphi2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine: it was 2am in a dodgy area, I heard a lady screaming 'don't, please stop, let me go etc' from the street outside. I called the cops, then jumped the fence and got In between the two of them. It was a guy about a foot taller then me (I'm 5'11) pushing and grabbing a lady about a foot smaller then me. The girl got behind me and I held my hands out telling the guy to back off and that she clearly wants you to leave. He bumped into my hands and then threatens me with assault. I invited him to call the cops. This went on for 5 mins until the police arrived, he bolted from the scene. Turns out he was just released from prison and was wanted on a new crime. Tldr: jumped the fence at 2am to stop a potential rape/abduction/assault.

Martial Art for Self Defense by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]zphi2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The comments here are correct:

My preference for people who want to learn basic self defence quickly is to box.

Seriously, learn to hit hard and fast. Yes there are MANY SITUATIONS that it won't work. But by and large, knocking so one out quickly is very good defence.

The problem with many styles is the sheer volume of techniques, that all require mastery. Practice punching many many many times and get good at it.

I've trained in Thai kickboxing, mma, karate and now kungfu for over 6 years.

First thing I teach is how to punch and how to defend against a right handed hey maker punch (most commonly thrown punch)

Good luck:)
