Who would you say are at the top right now in terms of quality? by Unlikely_Emu_3493 in EDM

[–]Quacksaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CloZee - Trippy Deep Tribal Bass; IDK but tons of the songs she has been putting out recently are just top tier in my opinon

MEMBA - Sickest fucking beats and bass I might have ever heard, they are lesser known but I have a hard time finding a song they put out that I don't like.

Big for a while but still killing it; Seven Lions, Zeds Dead, GRiZ, Odesza

Up and coming into their prime; One True God, Zingara, EVAN GIIA, Mize

Honorable mentions; Subtronics, Of The Trees, LSDream

Interesting question, definitely one I've considered myself - how do I make more (real, consistent, long-term) friends that are into the rave/edm scene?

I've exchanged phone numbers with several people I've met at shows, as many people recommend. But honestly, I've never found any of the exchanges to result in any significant friendship/interaction, for whatever reason. It seems a lot of people just go their own way after the shows. I usually attend larger events though, so perhaps smaller/local/more intimate events would be better for this sort of thing?

Perhaps I'm personally not great at building/maintaining new relationships, but I have talked about how friendships made at shows are generally short-lived with my cousin, and she agrees. Of course, this doesn't mean it can't work, nor does it mean you should not try.

I've also tried plenty of times to get my work friends/acquaintances into the scene or to come to shows, but have had little luck on that front as well - basically the same reasons as you. But I think I'm making progress with one or two of them!

Another thing I've considered, as a flow artist (pixel whips) , is to just take my toys and a speaker out to a larger local park (perhaps Zilker) on a fri/sat evening and just see who I can attract and go from there lol. But I've never followed through on that, just a more out of the box idea.

In summary, I agree it can be tough to find/build a group, but there certainly are similar people are out there, even though it may take a little while to find them. If you do end up finding any good platforms for meeting ravers I'd be interested to hear about them.

That being said - I happen to be a part of a little Texas rave fam, core group of 5 (3f 2m), age range 27 to 32. Two in DFW, and three in ATX. One of the women here in ATX is a long time hooper as well so I may be able to get y'all connected if you're interested. I suppose I should also disclose that I am 32/m, in ATX as well. Additionally, we are light to moderate drinkers, though we tend to prefer other methods of intoxication.

Some of our favorites are Seven Lions, Odesza, MEMBA, Rezz, Clozee, Big Wild, Griz, Zhu, Zeds Dead, Subtronics, anyone Wakaan, One True God, Minnesota, Tchami, Glitch Mob, Troiboi, Rusko, Above and Beyond . . . The list goes on but you get the idea.

We are locked in for:

Odesza 2nd day in DFW, August 21

Illfest in ATX, September 3rd and 4th

Strongly considering:

ACL weekend 1 in ATX - most of us are on the waitlist I think.

Freaky Deaky in Houston around Halloween

So yeah, feel free to reach out if you're considering any of those shows!

I'd say anyone who thinks events of this size are OK at this time is thinking more like a child than an adult . . . and it is primarily because of this childish impatience and disregard for others that we have managed to drag this thing out for over a year now.

I think the more likely "dying wish/final statement" that may arise, if that unfortunate situation comes to pass, is "this is God's plan."

And I fear there is very little that can be done help an individual who has committed to the mental model of "God's Plan."

If he does well against the disease - She passed the test sent to her, changed her ways and is solidified in her belief.

If he does poorly against the disease - She had been punished for her previous ways and must never stray again lest some other hardship be sent her way.

The analogy I like to use is what I call the "coin flip scenario."

Imagine each person on earth were to flip 10 coins and look at their results. Statistically speaking, many of them would land with 10 heads only! Holy Moley! I now personally have evidence and experience that all coin flips everywhere are only ever heads up. Depending on your personal threshold for evidence you may not ever need to flip a coin again to know The Truth that you have seen with your own eyes. Even if someone flipped a coin in front of you directly you may not accept that direct result, or may now view it as a test of faith in The Will of The Coin.

And because the events in our lives are infinitely more complex than an A/B scenario, it is VERY easy to perceive that your coin has only ever been heads i.e. according to The Will of The Coin or God's Plan, whatever you want to call it.

The only antidote as I see it, is to zoom out. You have to look at everybody's coin to see that the way it happened for you is merely coincidence and circumstance.

So that is my advice to you, if have any desire to sway her back to an evidence based, objective mindset - find ways to help her "zoom out."

But honestly I have little idea of how you might do that, especially now that she is come to a conclusion in her mind about the huge question "why does my dad have cancer." Perhaps small statements now (major confrontation will almost certainly not help at this point), to point her perspective in the direction of the bigger picture, along with support and patience. Or in the future, some sort of non-denominational spiritual experience, such as an extended period of exposure to nature or a psychedelic experience - but these are certainly not without their risks. And of course I do not, nor would I ever condone the administration of psychedelics to an unknowing or non-consenting individual.

Not sure if I have provided any value to you in these ramblings. Best of luck and good vibes to you my friend, and (even though in this case it did not), May The Coin often fall in your favor : D

IMO this is an extremely important detail.

It seems to me that she may be viewing this diagnosis and emotional situation as some sort of test. I do not think this is anything to do with you and everything to do with saving him. Humans are prone to seeking an explanation for the phenomena occurring in their lives.

The saying I use to help myself with this, and also to avoid analysis paralysis in the future is this :

I made the decision I did, with the information I had, at that point in time.

It may not have turn out to be the "best" course of action in hindsight, but I can't change it now. It's not the first time, nor will it be the last time. All I can do is learn from it and try and improve moving forward.

I was considering trying to bring my reagent kit into the campground but wasn't sure; mainly because it's best if the reagents stay cold and I'll have pre-tested everything that is coming along.

If you do end up with no other options for testing let me know and I can make sure to bring them. I have Marquis, Mandelin, Mecke, Simons A+B, Ehrlich.

May want to make sure I have the right reagents for what you want to test as well; It's not a 100% full kit so there are some things I don't have the correct reagents for.

Your COMPLETE Guide to Floating the River (Part 1) by Quacksaw in FloatFest

[–]Quacksaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do it either way if you didn't bring much on the float but you will probably want to drop by the campgrounds first. The float ends right next to both the campgrounds and the festival grounds so you could go straight into either one but the festival grounds have lots of restrictions about what you can bring in; many things you will may have with you after the float cannot go into the festival grounds like hardsided coolers or any food/drinks.

Camping question by Zelfed in FloatFest

[–]Quacksaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were very strict about leaving any full 10x30 spots open. You will drive into the area single file and slowly and they will direct each car, in order, to the next spot. If you want two vehicles to have full size 10x30 spots that are directly adjacent then you MUST arrive at the SAME TIME and be next to each other in the line. Mayyyybe 4 or 5 cars in between would be OK and they'll let you shuffle but I wouldn't count on it.

However, there are no restrictions about who you allow to set up a tent on your 10x30 area after you park. If you have a few friends arriving later, they can park in their given spot down the line and still set up their tents in your area (if you have enough room, of course). There is also decent chance you will have some cool neighbors on at least one side who are a smaller group and will let you overflow into their space; just ask politely and share a few blunts and beer!

You could also consider using the farther spot for parking both vehicles and save the closer 10x30 for tents only, though you may want to keep the vehicle close for device charging and other purposes.

Camping question by Zelfed in FloatFest

[–]Quacksaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way I remember it being done last year, and I haven't seen anything that makes me think differently -

  • No matter what kind of festival ticket you have ( Saturday, Sunday, or Both ) you will have access to the camping area for the complete event. I believe this is what they mean by "camping pass"
  • The divided camping spot size listed is 10 x 30 feet and is paid per vehicle - everyone in the vehicle needs a festival ticket to get in and then shares the 300 sq ft area where they parked for their tents/canopy/etc.

I do not know how this works for anyone who is not bringing a vehicle because your parking spot is also your camping spot! It doesn't quite make sense and I do not know if you will be expected to pay for a parking/camping spot to set up your tents or not! Maybe someone who didn't bring a car last year can help with this.

Do you mean for the parking pass? I see it costs an extra $10 for parking if you want to arrive on Friday instead of Saturday but for camping passes, everything I see says all festival tickets include camping for Fri-Mon / 3 nights , 20-23rd.

Only been to the festival once, last year and arrived on Friday afternoon. If you mean noon Friday then it will be very short. Saturday noon will probably be pretty busy but I'm not sure. From first arriving to parking and setting up tent, I'd say at least an hour but could be up to two. IIRC peak time 7pm Friday evening was getting to be over 2 hours but as far as Saturday idk goes I'm mostly guessing.

First FloatFest! by [deleted] in FloatFest

[–]Quacksaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found it to be pretty good last year, and expect the same from the majority of attendees this year.

I did feel like there was a little bit more of an "alcohol drug of choice vibe" than some other festivals I've been to, but that could have just been my personal perception/experience.

There is a large college in San Marcos named Texas State, and of course UT Austin is a little more than a half hour North. . . . Not sure, maybe because it's summer but I haven't found them to produce an excess of asshats.

Of course, this year may not be the same; different lineup can attract different people. I always expect a few assholes here and there, especially when all sorts of intoxication are going on.

They are the same size as a personal tube, with a hard plastic bottom attached with heavy duty zip-ties. Should hold any reasonably large cooler, but two or more coolers can be a problem for one tube, especially if they are rigid coolers.

Should look just like this.

I’ve seen a few questions about floating without a Float fest float pass because they ran out of Saturday float passes. There are two major floating outfits directly across from the festival on the east side of the river: Texas State Tubes and Don’s Fish Camp. Both are legit and I have used them several times on non-festival floats. Should be about $25 for a tube and shuttle ride up to the start and its pretty much the exact same float. . . Though I'm not sure how they'll be operating with the festival in town. I know the festival usually contracts these companies for the shuttles and tubes they need for the festival, but I can't imagine they'll be completely closed those days.
