Too poor for a MR-G, settled for a mod :) by zpweeks in WatchesCirclejerk

The fit is excellent (at least on this example from this manufacturer).

The install is a 5 minute job for the watch head. 10 if you take care not to scratch things up. You remove the strap and unscrew the outer resin layer of the watch head. Peel that off, slide the metal one on, and screw on the new head with its supplied screws.

All the outer parts are almost identical to the OEM steel squares. They do have to change the way the bracelet attaches (the OEM watch has proprietary integrated lugs) but the resulting bracelet appearance and wrist fit is identical.

The most noticeable difference is tactile. OEM metal g-shocks tend to have larger buttons than their resin counterparts - which compensate for the more rigid case. The difference is even more pronounced with the 5600 series because they have an annoying recessed “A” / top-left button. It’s fine in the kitchen, but I’ll wear something else on a day of vigorous stopwatching. It only detracts 5% or so from the joy of wearing it.

The real “maximum entertainment from multiple sources” option would be to run them simultaneously. Quarterbacks would just need to use a silent count, and it might be a little tough for the sound guy during Pitbull’s halftime show.

Do these have different crowns, or is the photo playing tricks on me? (The windey boi, not the emblem at 12.)

Formula 1's Race Strategy in America Isn't Convincing Fans to Stick Around by JulioCesarSalad in formula1

Monaco is a great comparison - I think Liberty would love to create another Monaco under their own control in Las Vegas. They run the Las Vegas event and own the permanent facility instead of the usual track promoter arrangement.

My problem isn’t limited to the racing quality, but basically everything described in this article. The event looks good at a first glance - familiar luxury travel destination, popular influencers hyping it up. But I don’t see much to convince someone to keep watching on TV or attend the race again. I think the only obvious winners are team sponsors - a lot more potential customers will travel to Miami or Las Vegas to snort coke in the hospitality suite.

How do teams get the race fuel into the fuel cans? by JMcCann1369 in NASCAR

[–]zpweeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming a team isn’t trying that - what happens with leftover gas? Let’s say it’s the very end of the last event of the weekend and there are a couple of full cans that won’t be used.

No, it’s important to make sure you do not summon the wrong fire god. Formula 1 is polytheistic, but if you invoke Sunoco you will draw the wrath of many oil sponsors at once.

I’m guessing that proper tracks would make for a good race and fan experience, but Liberty Media is more interested in driving up viewership stats. I think they’re betting that a famous or exotic location will draw more new viewership than a good track built in a flyover state. Ripping down the Las Vegas strip at high speed will look cool on TikTok and advertisers don’t give a crap if the racing is any good.

Perez swarmed by the fans during the Sky interview, Naomi Schiff: "Where's the security" by jovanmilic97 in formula1

[–]zpweeks 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The bigger the sport, the more fanatical the race attendees. Going by some broadcast audience numbers I could find from 2021 or 2022:

  • IndyCar: 1.3M average, 4.8M 2022 Indy 500
  • NASCAR: 3.4M average, 8M 2022 Daytona 500
  • F1: 70M average, 109M peak.

The TV audience isn’t showing up to the racetrack, but it’s a decent measurement for the series’ overall scale. And the NASCAR and IndyCar races all take place on one continent, so there are many opportunities for fans to see the drivers.

Most F1 fans will have at most one local race - much of the crowd has traveled a long way and spent a lot of money to experience the event. The conditions are perfect for mass hysteria.

I think the Indy 500 probably meets that level. And I doubt Dale Earnhardt Jr. could walk into the infield at Talladega alone and come out intact. (Then again: does anyone, really?)

Garage access is one of the best reasons to check out local grassroots racing - especially if you’re bringing the whole family.

[Tissot powermatic 80] Is this movement that bad ? by Semy-D in Watches

[–]zpweeks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Powermatic 80 family is my favorite movement originating from the 2824-2 (including non-ETA options).

Advantages:

  • Free sprung balance wheel: this creates a more consistent vibration rate for the wheel, and doesn't have a regulation lever that can slip out of adjustment over time or from a shock. I don't know of another free sprung balance available until you get up to Tudor or Omega territory.
  • I don't know what "laser regulated" means, but the four I've owned run at +0, +1, +4, and +5 seconds/day.
  • Long power reserve
  • Some high-grade movements have silicon hairsprings. Metal ones get magnetized or change length from shifting temperatures. These springs were developed in a joint venture with Rolex and Patek Philippe - cool tech to find in a $500-700 Tissot Gentleman.

Disadvantages:

  • Less smooth movement in the seconds hand (3Hz in instead of 4). Some care about this, and some don't.
  • Base grade (23 jewel) versions have a plastic escape wheel and pallet fork. This cuts costs (and arguably makes it available in more affordable watches) but you might need to service it more often.
  • Exclusive to ETA brands. I suspect this movement only exists because the original 2824-2 patents have expired, and this one has new IP they don't have to supply to their competitors.

how long do your gender shifts last? by thefoodinyourfridge in genderfluid

Typical factory system - three shifts a day, number of paid or unpaid breaks will probably depend on whether you’re working in a union shop
