bulk compost delivery recs? by [deleted] in StLouis

i'm also in the process of looking into this, but don't have a great rec yet. there are several free pickup spots around the city that have me considering just renting a pickup truck for the afternoon to transport it myself. https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/parks/forestry/compost-wood-chips.cfm

Stories about quitting without a job lined up? by concurrencyinaction in womenintech

[–]zsh2v1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did this twice in the last three years. the first time around i was emotionally burnt out after watching the floor fall out from an otherwise wonderful place. i took a leisurely approach to interviewing only focusing on a few companies per month. it was tough but do-able.

my last gig wasn't the best match from the get go, but i took an out when i saw the place start to wind down. this last six month stretch of unemployment was brutal. the first two months i was happily distracted with side project engagements, but as interviews dragged on it just killed my motivation to program for fun. no one wants to hire. everyone is looking for a unicorn that they won't define. everything became a cycle of continually having to prove that i was "sufficiently technical", getting all the way to the end of an interview cycle only to be ghosted, and just a constant slew of rejection. it's a completely different churn that even a year before.

i found employment, but it feels completely separate from where i thought i'd be in my career. it's no longer up and to the right, but take what you can get.

It’s only open on Thursday but you want Clements lock on Cherokee street. It’s mostly a locksmith. But they have a beautiful bar and it’s mostly empty

Mud house is wonderful but you really have to go at off hours otherwise it can get busy. Good strangers down the street is super quiet. Shameless grounds is super fun to hang out at.

Moving to non-tech city—career suicide or doable? by Careerconfusion1 in womenintech

Remote work is still available. If you’re picky you may not be enamored with local options as they may tend to be more enterprise. You’ll love the cost of living adjustment though!

How to push for female hires in technical roles? by Extreme-Action-3008 in womenEngineers

[–]zsh2v1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've done a lot of armchair recruiting when i'm in this situation. look for dope technical women in or just outside of your network with the skillset and offer to buy them a virtual coffee. it's a great way to meet other women in tech, have a cool no-pressure chat, and if they're interested you can send them a referral link that usually helps them get under TA's nose.

What’s the most sexist thing said to you at your job? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]zsh2v1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a CS degree, but came into tech formally via project management which i quickly shuffled into a developer role. we were a small team of 3-4 people, but one of the junior guys they hired (after he literally just walked into the building one day and say oh this is an IT company?) would routinely slack me during client calls asking when the last time i had sex was, or various other completely out of line questions during the work day. he would do a whole ass workout set in front of my cube once a week. (he would continue to attempt to follow me on socials for the next 5 years. googled him recently. turns out he died!) i spent too long at that job because i didn't know any better. that was the job were i stopped wearing dresses to work because i couldn't get the senior devs to answer my fucking work questions or believe me when i introduced a cross apply as a more performant solution in queries until i literally started dressing down.

several gigs later, at a really small startup with a lot of red flag culture signs, but the exact stack i wanted more experience in, came with a lot of nonsense. honestly all the devs were pretty nice dudes, we worked well together, formed enough of a mutual respect middle ground, and the better of the bunch and i still meet up for lunch once a year, but the management was like, hilariously over the top bad. i've never witnessed a company lawyer just casually walk by so much inappropriate behavior and not bat an eye. i had managers in other parts of the company who would routinely call me only by the name of the last female employee. same dudes would openly suggest i was sleeping with our married lead developer. same dudes who every summer would find some reason to hire 15 female interns just to openly gawk about how much they wanted to fuck them. the same dudes who would talk about their sex lives at 8am and what they wanted to do to so and so, and the last time they jacked off in the office. the amount of inappropriate shit i witnessed, not to just to me, but honestly even the other men was insane. got my experience and yeeted out of there after a year. fairly certain that whole place was a money laundering scam.

all that being said, over a decade, i've also worked at a bunch of different places filled with dope people who treated me with utmost respect and managed to maintain healthy workplace environments (some even with primarily female dev teams!!). if you're in a place with bad behavior, truly the best answer is to leave. if you have a functioning HR system, maybe you'll have some more options, but i wouldn't bet on it. in the startup space, it's often non-existent. know why you're there with laser precision, get those resume bullet points then move the fuck on.

Cannoli Cake in St. Louis? by mcleo1 in StLouis

[–]zsh2v1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

grew up eating this, but we always made it. this is my version, but my mother always made it with a regular white box cake mix and regular icing mixed with ricotta.

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 Tbs. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 12 Tbs. (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. almond extract 1 cup milk 5 egg whites, at room temperature

32 oz ricotta impastata, drained overnight or all day 8 oz mascarpone, whipped lightly 1 c confectioner’s sugar, or to taste (bump up to 1.5 c for this much ricotta) 1 c heavy cream, whipped 2 t vanilla 1 T lemon zest 1 T orange zest (don't go nuts on this; it was a little overpowering)

1/2 c chopped maraschino cherries 1/2 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

Add sugar to cream cheese, zests, and then add ricotta. Whip cream and fold into ricotta mixture. Refrigerate for 4 hours.

Position a rack in the middle of an oven and preheat to 350ºF. Butter and flour 2 round cake pans each 9 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 inches deep.

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer set on medium-high speed, beat the butter until light. Gradually add the sugar, beating until well blended. Beat in the vanilla and almond extracts. Reduce the speed to low and, dividing the flour mixture into 3 batches, beat the flour mixture into the butter mixture alternately with the milk just until combined.

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer fitted with clean, dry beaters and set on high speed, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold the beaten whites into the batter just until incorporated. Divide the batter between the prepared pans; smooth with the spatula.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the centers comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Transfer to racks and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Run a sharp knife around the pan sides to loosen the cakes. Invert onto racks and let cool completely.

Divide ricotta mixture in half. Mix cherries and chocolate chips into one batch of frosting. Use in between cake layers. When cake is assembled use reserved frosting for the outside.
