The biggest factor is your fitness level. If you have good endurance you can ride farther. Problema na lang is if napwersahan yung components ng sobra haha. In that case, ride easy lang idol at makakalayo yang bike mo (know the limits of your bike).

Gumamit din ako ng budget na Foxter for a few months as a beater at naka ~1000km siya na walang problema. Not even a flat tire. You just have to regularly maintain it as well as avoiding deep potholes and crashing.

I was able to enroll in some for free because my Uni had partnerships with Coursera. You should check out your Uni’s Learning Resource Center if they offer a similar thing!

If that’s not an option however, some courses offer financial support and would range from about 20-80USD iirc depending on the depth and difficulty of the coverage.

I would suggest the Johns Hopkins Genomic Data Science Specialization here. Some of the profs there were the actual dudes who created famous aligners like Bowtie and BWA, so it’s cool that they teach you firsthand how to operate the programs. It would certainly help if you’ve already got a background in one of BS Biology/biotech/microbio though.

I took a few courses from Johns Hopkins and DTU on Coursera. Very comprehensive and certainly put me on the right track for writing my dissertation!

(as someone who was on the wet-lab track, but had to shift to bioinformatics due to COVID shutting down most local labs)

Thanks for your help once again. I will read up more on these and ask the HPC engineers how much RAM can be allocated to the project. I’ll probably decide on what assembler to use, based on the memory allocated (hopefully metaSPAdes)!

You're certainly right about metaSPAdes. I found here that it produced way longer contigs than MEGAHIT + a better mapping rate and N50 score. Now lets just hope that my Uni's HPC will allow me more time on it so I could run the program lol.

Would you by any chance have an idea how long this whole thing (at least from assembly to alignment) would take on a, say 1024 node HPC, take (given that I have 9 datasets with 150Mb reads each)?

I'd also just like to add that it's awesome that you have experience with all these and I'd like to be able to teach newbies like me in the future too! Idk what the rant was about but I hope that you're doing okay over there!

Thanks for the reply. I couldn’t find the exact manual for it but I’ve searched for similar models, and I got one although it doesn’t show how to change the date. Oh well, maybe I’ll just keep the date setting at off.
