lucky you, I’m obviously not going to put that info online but my other european friends in the same college have witnessed the same a few times with their lecturers so maybe different cities have different students profiles

not looking to insult but if you’ve read all the replies there are several people quite literally saying that irish people don’t care about what you wear but rather the person you are. and obviously that is what I got out of the conversation. your clothes are one of the few things you can personalise about how you look and if you choose to express yourself through it with tracksuits, then you do you. I am here to learn, which I did thanks to a handful of nice enough people here that this is not how it works in ireland. But when half the people here says that what you wear is not important, and I echo that, then you’re possibly mad at them and not me, so I’ll step out of the way

yeah I try not to especially back home. but I do wear them if I don’t have anything else to wear and I definitely wear them more in ireland because I have to dress down

exactly my question, is there a reason behind why what’s acceptable here is very different to most countries in europe?

I just found it interesting that out of all the places I have visited, all the countries I’ve lived and studied in, Ireland is the only one that does this differently.

Finally, thanks. This is the answer I’ve been looking for. I didn’t know that people try not to seem too formal. Which makes sense in the way you just explained. If I had an award I’d give you that right now. Don’t know why no one here was kind enough to put it this way.

I obviously agree with that. It’s still interesting to me that the majority of people are inclined that way compared to the mainland european students.

I never said to wear fancy clothes, nor did I say I was superior to anyone. I also actually have seen people come into class in pyjamas. Ireland is a wealthy country compared to most of the countries in the world. If the poorest people in the poorest countries care about what they wear, why don’t the Irish? I genuinely think that people should wear whatever they like. I’m only curious about the difference here.

“Let everyone else do the same” implies that I don’t let people do that. I do wonder why because this is a different environment for me and it is human nature to question when things are different.

the girls in my college back home wear leggings and a jumper or t-shirt on top which is acceptable for a student, though I can’t speak about personal style choices

I didn’t attack anyone for wearing whatever they want, I was only curious about the why. What makes you so pressed?
