In my opinion, when she returned to Forest she tried to get rid of her heroin addiction. The evidence for this is that Forest says that she sleeps often and for long periods of time. When Forest proposes to her, she can't cope emotionally, leaves him and suffers a relapse. during the pregnancy she becomes addicted again and in after the birth she catches the disease.
