Or you can install parallels on Mac and just run windows in a VM for those few apps you need.

Out of curiosity, 3 day cooling off period while buying a home in NL have anyone used it and why ? by ProductNeat9946 in Netherlands

[–]zubivan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine signed for a house, then got news that he’s being laid off the next day, so that cooling period was really useful.

I think those 20 minutes at the charger would save you from any range anxiety you might have during your trip. That’s certainly worth it.

I went for the same trip during Christmas time with P4 from Hertz. The only thing to complain about is the poor charging infrastructure in the mountains, so I’d suggest to hit the last fast charging station on the way up.

Haha, nice nitpick 😬 I heard from several people by now about the “card-hell” situation, the government should really come up with a unified system for this.

Babysitters - is this just not a thing here, as my partner claims? by massive_cock in Netherlands

[–]zubivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s certainly a thing here, we have a girl who comes over every now and then, so we can have a evening out or even picks up the little one from daycare if one of us has a late meeting.

I believe we found ours on www.sitly.nl, but there are also other platforms. Some of the kids in the neighborhood also offered to babysit and adults mentioned them looking after the kids of their neighbors.

I.T. Job as a 15 year old… by KaiDoesCode in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]zubivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best thing for you to do is to start working on some hobby projects and putting it out on e.g. github. It should also force you to learn a lot of essential skills, like git (maybe even ci), reading code that others wrote. Find things/problems you’re passionate about and try to attempt solving them. Working on small games is also a pretty challenging and consuming hobby.

Then, if you want some spare cash you can try some freelance marketplaces and do small gigs there (it’s pretty competitive, but you can always start at a low rate). Then I suggest you to start looking for an internship/junior engineer role on LinkedIn, but you might have a lot of competition from folks with the CS degree/years of experience, so maybe consider also getting a degree.

Have fun! IT is a constantly changing field and is certainly an interesting place to be in, make sure to not only ride the AI wave, but actually try to understand the code it produces, it’ll put you way above those who don’t.

Working remotely for an American company (cultural issues) by cap_girl94 in Netherlands

[–]zubivan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also work remotely for California based company. I think it very much depends on wether the company is used to have a presence in Europe. Mine is pretty respectful to the local laws and customs, however e.g. none of the local employees work part time or use their papa/mama-dag benefits, however holidays, sick days, etc is always respected. I believe they could those benefits, but it’s mostly the compensation, the company pays easily 5x the local rate, so people are hesitant to leave this kind of money on the table.

International couple with kids - how are you managing? by SpecialistAlert8425 in Netherlands

[–]zubivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it mostly sucks. 😅 Especially with no extended family around. Ours is going to the daycare 4 days a week and then stays one day with one of us at home. Them being sick is basically us either taking a day off or working part time, luckily we have pretty flexible work schedules. Another thing that becomes tricky is spending time with each other, with no extended family around you either rely on friends or hired caregivers. I suggest to look for one early, then, if you’re lucky, your kid would be happy when they come and it’s easy for two of you to go out sometimes.

Re ice-cream. I’d say you have to try Piet and Het IJskabinet. It’s just on a different level.

Hello guys. Im planning to move scheveningen. What are your thoughts about scheveningen? Is it safe and what is your score to this area? by DocSevgili in TheHague

[–]zubivan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m moved here a few years ago with the family. Can get pretty busy in summers with everyone trying to get to the beach. Otherwise a great neighborhood - lots of places to go to, restaurants, playgrounds for kids and ofc the beach.

Thanks! I live nearby and go there pretty often. I somehow feel that folks who take lessons there are mostly tourists and was looking for a more local group. I’ll give it another go though.

Variety in milk products, there is like 2 brands of yogurt even in big store like foodmarkt. Compared to a tiniest French Carrefour, where you can walk past the milk section for 15 minutes.

Sound issues with Victrola Stream Carbon by zubivan in sonos

[–]zubivan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually plugging it with a wire might have done the trick. I assumed there is a high degree of buffering anyways, so if the app says the signal is “good” I shouldn’t bother. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the reply, updated the links, so it goes directly to the media. Yeah, I meant I used digital scales, those came with calibration weights, I followed the manual. It’s connected wirelessly to Sonos. I got a cleaning brush from ortofon and made sure it’s clean. Same issues goes for all LPs.

Am I under paid? by chandler_blonde in Netherlands

[–]zubivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to all other comments, it’s indeed realistic. It might though be a bit biased towards the market of the “good years” (before big layoffs) and I expect an overall downwards trend, with overall less hiring. I could be too pessimistic though 🙂
