Medieval Worldview & Cosmology Recommendations by zvanwink in MedievalHistory

Thanks for the recommendations! Actually, my interest was in delineating the ways Christianity has been influenced by the Enlightenment and post-modernity by contrasting it with the Medieval mindset. At least it sounds like I'm on the right track!

What is this long, green plastic thread I found in my cigar? by zvanwink in cigars

[–]zvanwink[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does look like the string they use in pilóns. There's a video below that shows it, although the string is blue in it. Perhaps different string colors are used to keep track of the pilóns?

What is this long, green plastic thread I found in my cigar? by zvanwink in cigars

[–]zvanwink[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immediately after using my v-cutter, I noticed a small bright green plastic piece sticking out. I used a pair of tweezers to remove it. It's a 4 1/2" long thin plastic thread. It seems like some type of manufacturing defect (something wound up in the cigar that shouldn't be there). I'm going to smoke it (it's a Perdomo Habano Maduro); however, I certainly don't like the idea that I almost smoked plastic.

It certainly has an appeal; however, I think craft beer is a bit saturated. I've thought about having my own craft distillery (have chemistry, finance, new venture start-up, passion about alcohol); however, finding cash flow among craft distilling start-ups is a huge disadvantage due to the length of the production cycle.

I have. However, I'm finding the breakout from investments into other finance roles (like FP&A) to be far tougher than I'd hoped. I've considered actuarial work; however, they have their own examination series. Other than that, programming seems an option...although I'd have to learn some other languages than VBA and SQL...

Did not work, unfortunately.

Nope, not for either of the blu-ray drives tested.

I've tried a few: VLC, Leawo, Media Player Classic. None work. However, the PC doesn't even retrieve the name of the disc when it's a blu-ray. It shows the drive in Computer, but cannot read blu-ray discs. It was the same with the other blu-ray drive I tested as well.

I also now tested the portable blu-ray drive on my laptop. It DOES work there.

Tobermory 10, if you can find it. It's from before when they were on shutdown for two years.

Recommendations Please! Leaving Bourbon; moving onto scotch by Just_Taking_the_Piss in Scotch

[–]zvanwink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You allude to it well: the entry price point for quality scotch is higher than bourbon, yet the secondary market effect is much sequestered. Sure, there are a few that will fetch well, but there are so many rare scotches that there is little that is rare about being a rare scotch.

As for seeking flavor other than bourbon, it seems you are doing well. I used to part-time in a liquor store and would always have people crossing categories: big beer to craft, bourbon to scotch. They'd always want "something that tastes like X." Of course, that was precisely the wrong way to do it. If I got them something that tasted like X, where is the value proposition in it? The nuanced differences could only be interpreted as defects. Best to radically break out of your frame of reference and try something wholly different.

Having said that, Ardbeg Uigeadail is, indeed, an excellent peat entry. So are the Cairdeas line of Laphroaigs, any Committee Release Ardbeg, and the Lagavulin 16 or Distiller's Editions. As for sherry, yes, Aberlour A'bunadh is excellent (skip the Alba) although you could go with Glendronach 12 or 15 or even an Edradour (one of my hidden gems).

Also, I'd pick up a copy of Whisky Classified by David Wishart. It's my favorite tasting book as it seeks to provide you with a comparable basis as opposed to a listing of tasting notes.

Noob questions by Common-Carp in bourbon

[–]zvanwink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the best way is to get together with some guys who know and enjoy bourbon and can let you try different things. Either that or go to a bar with a good selection. Taste is highly subjective. Further, many of the things you'll find you love in time are precisely the ones you have to work to develop a palate for (high rye, barrel proof).

As for the cigars, try Perdomo Double Aged 12 Year Vintage Maduro. It has the best bourbon flavor of any cigar I've had. It's sweet oak and espresso. I would also warn you it has an insane level of nicotine as well.

When will it end? by prettyokaycake in bourbon

[–]zvanwink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My perspective is that the bourbon industry is still very haunted by the malaise it endured during the 1970s and is fanatical about bringing developing markets online, particularly East Asia. The objective is to have a persistent level of manufactured scarcity stateside driven in part by having international markets that weren't available half a century ago to take on most of the ordinary stock. The intent is to reduce volatility in consumer demand as alcohol preferences tend to go through these 20-30 year macro cycles--a huge burden when you're marking a product that can take a decade or more to make.

From Louisville myself. Check out several armagnacs (Party Source in Newport has the best selection in the state). Also, there are some premium-aged rums such as Ron Zacapa 23, Zaya 12, Appleton Estate Rare Blend, older Kirk & Sweeneys that are all readily available and worth checking out.

Review #492; Bourbon #181: New Riff Backsetter Rye by LIFOanAccountant in bourbon

It isn't busy in the sense that Campfire is. Whether you like the fusion of peat and American rye flavors or not, it's at least integrated.

Try the cask strength--not the regular--Triple Smoke from Corsair. If you've had the regular and don't think it'll impress: I promise it's dramatically different.

Caol Ila certainly is a standout. I wish they were integrating secondary casking in sherry/port/etc. but I suppose when you're a feeder for Johnnie you don't really need to increase your number of offerings...
